To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, FLPG was joined by local politicians, governmental staff, and environmentalists for the first Long Pond Greenbelt Summit. The group celebrated the collective action that created the Greenbelt and discussed our plans for the future, which include continued efforts to: (1) preserve more land, redefining the Greenbelt target area to encompass its hydrological boundaries; (2) implement multi-stakeholder processes for management of mutual areas, such as common signage and enforcement; and (3) develop educational and outreach programs to raise the public’s awareness of this unique area and familiarize newly elected officials and others about why the Greenbelt is such an environmental treasure.

Greenbelt Champion Laura Smith Bench Dedication
2021 Champion of the Greenbelt,Laura Smith, was back in the Greenbelt on May 11th for our bench dedication ceremony in her honor. The bench is at Little Long Pond off Laurel Lane in Sag Harbor. 2022 Sundays at Two Lecture Series Kicks Off
We started with a blank canvas to kick off our 2022 Sundays at Two lecture series – literally! Artist Viktor Butko demonstrated plein air painting in the Greenbelt on May 22nd. There is no lecture planned for Sunday, June 19th, which is the Juneteenth holiday. FLPG will resume Sundays at Two in July with two lectures: on Sunday, July 10th, Chenae Bullock of the Shinnecock Nation will lead an Indigenous Ecological Knowledge plant walk; and on Sunday, July 17th, Mary Morgan of Drawndown East End will share her favorite climate solutions for everyday life. Tuesday, June 14 – Full Strawberry Super Moon Hike, 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Co-sponsored by FLPG and SOFO. Join us on a leisurely-paced hike through open-field trails. This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. It was christened for the strawberry because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June. Meet at the SOFO parking lot, 377 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton, 200 yards north of the RR tracks. Leader: Dai Dayton, 631-745-0689.
Saturday, June 18 – Old Farm Road Cleanup, 8:00 a.m. Help clean up the roadside along FLPG’s adopted road. Meet at Poxabogue Park, 191 Old Farm Road, Sagaponack. Bring gloves, bags provided. Leader: Peter Wilson, 631-553-1393.
