Pastor Glen's focus for his message for

this upcoming weekend:

Most people operate from a “theology of scarcity.” It’s surprising given that in truth we are far from the poverty we believe we live in. There is a fear deep within that drives us to seek self-security, a barrier to living in full trust in God’s blessings. In the face of the large, hungry crowd, the disciples are focused on what they do not have. Jesus leads them to a new way of living, not in fear or seeking after power, but finding that grace is sufficient for all things.

This is the theme of the Sunday night message / Bible study for the 7:00pm Worship that will be this Sunday in the

Prayer Garden.

Bible study theme for August 6th: The Book of Acts provides a curious interlude in the New Testament narrative, an interesting insight into the life of the first generation of the followers of Jesus as they made their witness to the Resurrection in the ancient world. For better or worse, we are long way from being that church. That doesn’t mean we can’t

 learn something from them.

Come and join us as we seek a simpler, more faithful,

and better way.

Ruth Circle

ATTENTION: All members of Ruth Circle Bible Study and any other women who would like to join us!  We will be meeting at the Johansen Manor social room on Tuesday,

August 8, at 2:00 P.M.  Please bring your Bibles and also bring your "Gather" magazine. If you do not have the "Gather" magazine come anyway. Trudy Hutton will be our lesson leader and Ellen Whitaker will be providing refreshments.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Faith Chests

There has been a lot of interest in getting the faith chest ministry going again. We will hold a information meeting on Thursday, August 10th at 7pm in the faith chest work area. The work area is in the basement of the church in the west end (the area is under the altar, or old stage area.) The southwest door will be unlocked and it is the easiest way to enter. We need to look at what we have to work with, what night or nights work best, equipment condition and amount of supplies available, etc.

Social Concerns Committee:

With school starting soon it is time for our annual BACKPACK PROMOTION--a fundraiser which supports the FOODBANK for the HEARTLAND--the organization which supplies packs filled with healthy food to take home for the weekend for chronically hungry elementary and middle school children in Blair. Look for the exhibit which will be in the narthex starting this Saturday, August 5 and through the month of August that will demonstrate what is included in these back packs. You will also receive flyers at the worship services on August 5 and 6 which will provide you with more information on ways to contribute to this worthy cause. One way in which you can do this is to send your contributions to Foodbank for the Heartland: Attn: Backpack Program, 10525 J Street, Omaha, NE 68127.

FLC will be staffing the WASHINGTON COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER on Saturday, August 26. Sign-up sheets for volunteers will be available on August 5 and following  at the Welcome Center.  You may sign up for the whole morning or for 2 hours--8:00 to l0:00 A.M. or 10:00 A.M. to Noon. This offers us an opportunity to be good stewards of our environment. And a huge thank you goes to all FLC members who staff the Recycling Center every week!

Our SUMMER GARDEN MARKET is now OPEN!  You are invited to share your excess garden produce, your flowers, and your baked goods! Please give generously for what you purchase, as proceeds will go to ELCA WORLD HUNGER. Produce may be brought to the church and placed on the Garden Cart in the narthex any time when the church is open--preferably prior to 3:00 P.M. on Fridays and between 4:00 and 7:00 P.M. on Saturdays.

In the next several months it is our goal to educate the congregation on the

activities of the Committees at First Lutheran. We will plan to highlight the

activities of one of these committees each month. In doing this we will plan two separate activities for each committee. These include:

1. A presentation by the committee chair person or representative of the

committee to the Church Council regarding the committee’s activities. This

would include the goals of the committee, who makes up the committee,

what some of the activities of committee are, and how the Church Council

could assist the committee in their work.

2. Following the presentation to the Council, a short summary of the

committee’s activities will be included in the weekly E-Blasts sent to the

The goal of this summary again will be to highlight the activities of the committee and hopefully increase the interest in the committees by the congregation and possibly help In the recruitment of the members to the committees.

Communion Update:

Thank you for helping with this accommodation for Pastor Glen: because it is difficult for Pastor to bring communion to members in the pews, if you find it physically difficult to come forward during communion, we invite you to pick up the communion elements as you come into the Sanctuary and receive them during the communion liturgy when the Pastor indicates.
