Welcome to CPC's newly designed e-letter and 18th iteration of Flatfile Friday!
Flatfile Friday
On the third Friday of each month, CPC's very own Flat Phil gives you a peek into the drawers and other hidden places to discover amazing work by gallery artists that you can buy. This week, as summer wanes and the midwest gears up for fall color, we got a bit nostalgic and decided to revisit the work of our past featured artists, some of whom have replenished their inventory with new work or multiples of pieces that were sold. Enjoy!

Online Classes
Due to high demand, and the uncertainties of the pandemic, we'll be rolling out new online courses throughout the fall for those who just really like learning from the comforts of home while petting the dog.

For our online classes, we've devised supply lists with some alternative options wherever possible, so that you can stay on budget while improvising with materials found around the house. We've also heavily discounted the courses to make them more accessible to all. All courses are taught through live, weekly Zoom meetings and supplemental recorded demo videos. Get creative with us at home, from anywhere on the globe!
6 weeks | Sundays, September 20 - October 25, 2020 | 1-4pm | Cost: $215

Had enough of waiting around, wondering where to direct your creative energy? Wonder no more - sign up for Relief Printmaking Online! In this course, you will learn to make relief prints start to finish, from preparing imagery to cutting the block and printing. Perhaps the most accessible of print processes, relief can be done from the safety of your home. We can't return to the print shop yet but that won't stop us from printmaking! Classes will be taught in weekly live Zoom meetings and will be supplemented with recorded demo videos. A materials list will be provided via email upon registration.
bookbinding Megan Sterling
Bookbinding Basics at Home with Megan Sterling
4 weeks | Tuesdays, October 6 - 27, 2020 | 6-9pm | Cost: $150

This exciting online class is for anyone who's been curious about hand-creating their own books and wants to be able to do it at home. We take you through the basics to make a variety of hand-made book structures of your own that can be used as journals, notebooks or turned into artists' books. We will discuss tools and materials such as adhesives, book cloth, board, and paper types as well as techniques such as folding, sewing and gluing. Students will explore different types of stitches and basic structures, coming away with several of their own sample books that are ready to use including pamphlet stitches, accordion books, Japanese side-stitch and more! Classes will be taught in weekly live Zoom meetings and will be supplemented with recorded demo videos as needed. A materials list will be provided via email upon registration.
We have joined printmakers all over the world in a global art sale to support the fight against systemic racial injustice. 100% of sales from our BLM, Silence is Violence, and Printmakers Roll w the Revolution prints will benefit the following organizations:

BLM Chicago
The Chicago Community Bond Fund
Brave Space Alliance
Campaign Zero
My Block-My Hood-My City

These hand printed posters are suitable for protest or window display in homes, organizations and businesses. You may also download and print them out for free digitally. Scroll down for pdf's.

To purchase BLM screen prints ($25), Silence is Violence ($20), or Printmakers Roll with the Revolution woodcuts ($50), please email us to arrange payment and schedule a curbside pickup. Big thanks to so many of you who have purchased posters, and for also supporting the work of artists of color. CPC has already donated $1975 so far from sales to the above organizations fighting for racial justice. Please follow @printmakingasresistance on Instagram! Other great instafeeds we are watching: @prettyininkpress, @dugoodpress, @tanekeyaword, @blackwomenofprint, @latoyahobbs, @blackboxpress..... check them out.

The CPC studio is prioritizing programming to address systemic racism and the general lack of diversity within the printmaking community. A new residency open to women and trans individuals of color is underway and will be formally announced in September.

The CPC celebrates printmaking as a form of resistance, and is seeking partnerships with other organizations that champion current movements and educate young people. We are very much looking forward to working with Embarc this fall to provide virtual learning experiences for low-income high school students.

If you missed our email featuring the work of Amos P. Kennedy Jr.Steve PrinceAaron Coleman, and Stephen Wiggins, it is now ARCHIVED so you can revisit it any time, or just click on their names here to visit their websites.

The 31st Annual International Small Print Exhibition will be a bit different this year due to the pandemic. We'll be opening the show EARLY on November 1st to give interested buyers plenty of time to browse the show while maintaining a safe distance and avoiding crowds. The show will have both an in-person (by appointment) and online presence, where you can purchase work while sporting your most comfortable loungewear. We're super excited to roll out 2 new and fun features:

From The Archives
Here are some of our "print babies" - kids of some of our members and affiliates - who are now talented in their own right and jutting off to college or finishing high school, no doubt to pursue their own passions and dreams. We'd like to think they were positively influenced by growing up around ink and paper! Here we Feature the illustrious offspring of Hiroshi Ariyama, Dan Macadam, Dennis O'Malley and Dan Grzeca - we'll let you guess who's who!
COVID-19 Updates
We are so happy to have our socially distanced, masked, resident and member artists back in the shop working the presses and our private and semi-private students learning new print skills! For everyone's safety, studio time must be scheduled via the shared CPC Google calendar and only 3 artists may work in the main, front area of the shop at the same time, with an additional artist in the middle studio. The CPC is fully stocked with hand sanitizer, wipes, and disinfectant sprays for all work areas.

We continue to monitor Covid numbers in the city and believe we still have to make sacrifices in order to keep our community safe and healthy. With that in mind, we have made the decision to resume small, in-studio group classes in October. We will continue to host online classes throughout the fall. We are also offering in-person private and semi-private classes in all media! Call or email the studio for more information.

To view work in the gallery, you can schedule a gallery appointment by emailing the studio. All visitors are required to wear a mask covering their mouth and nose. Those interested in purchasing work in the gallery online may still do so via Paypal or credit card by phone. Please email to make arrangements. We offer either private, sanitary curbside pickup (free) or secure shipping ($25-$45 for domestic packages).

Stay healthy, be safe, and spread some ink.
