UPCOMING SOLO SHOW
COLORS OF SPRING, EXHIBITION AT THE HUNTINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY ON LONG ISLAND
|
|
In about ten days I'll be installing my first solo show of the year, by invitation of the librarians of the Huntington Public Library on Long Island. This is an invitation that particularly pleases me. Though I'd shown paintings and monotypes at this venue in the spring of 2015
Views of Town and Country
, the librarians who have invited me now were not on the staff at that time, do not know me, and had become aware of my work through this newsletter.
This time, the theme is
Colors of Spring
, so I've cut myself free of subject matter to focus on color, a lifelong preoccupation about which I've written in previous newsletters --
September 2018
and
June 2018
.
As many of you know, I was an academic art historian in my first profession -- a medievalist, yet, but with sub-specialties in the Baroque and 19th-century French painting. I had drawn and painted all my life, occasionally in disciplinary trouble at home (green and purple crayon on wallpaper under the fevered influence of chickenpox at five) and
in elementary school (drawing in class while bored -- more than once) because of it. As a wage-earning adult, my first color-related creative outlet was quilt-making, and I still have a 40-plus-year-old residual stash of fabric that appears frequently in still lifes and fabric collages. There followed a number of adult-ed classes in pastel, oil and watercolor. Next were four residencies at the late, lamented Montana Artists Refuge in Basin, Montana, where I focused on
plein air
mountain landscapes in pastel, oil, watercolor and gouache. Lots of green, blue and brown. On bad weather days, just like Vincent Van Gogh, I did still life. Different colors. Finally I took early retirement to make art full time -- such a good decision. I get to build on my art historical formation every time I make new art.
What's unusual for me in this Huntington exhibition is the juxtaposition of many mediums and styles. I no longer tolerate well the tedium of sewing but do enjoy making abstract fabric collages very similar to what I used to design as a quilt-maker. I'm showing these as a group for the first time. Juxtaposed to some of them are abstract designs in watercolor and acrylics based on the rhythms of Argentine tango -- all works I don't get to show in more traditional gallery situations. I wrote about this in an
April 2016 newsletter
. Other categories in this show are colorful floral still lifes and landscapes whose colors are particularly evocative of this coming season. These are a melange of oils, oil sticks, acrylics, watercolors and gouache, with supports of different types of canvas, panels and papers. l like to think of the variety here as a function of curiosity and experimentation, rather than as a symptom of Attention Deficit Disorder.
The inestimable men of Dave's Light Trucking of Brooklyn -- much appreciated additions to my professional team -- and I will be installing the show on March 1.
