Fort Bend ISD celebrates Black History Month; student creators to be celebrated by City of Missouri City
February is observed annually as Black History Month, and Fort Bend ISD joins others across the nation in celebrating the contributions of Black Americans to the rich history of the United States.
The City of Missouri City will host a month of free events celebrating Black authors and artists, and FBISD students will be among those creators on display.

Baines Middle School Principal Elizabeth Williams and Brazos Bend Elementary School Principal Dr. Felicia Bolden were named Fort Bend ISD’s 2024 Principals of the Year.

Chosen by their peers, these leaders exemplify strong school leadership and dedication to their students and staff.

Sullivan Elementary students deliver Valentine's Day cheer to assisted living facility
Sullivan Elementary Student Council officers recently delivered Valentine's Day cards to the residents at the Laurel Glen at Sugar Land Assisted Living Center.
The handmade cards were created for the residents to spread joy and kindness and to foster intergenerational connections.

Residents who received the cards were delighted that the students thought of them. The kind act showed the importance of giving back to the community.

Elkins High School engineering students win NASA challenge
Four Elkins High School juniors in the Aerospace Engineering Academy won the NASA TechRise Student Challenge, earning their experiment a spot on the Xodiac lander this summer.
With more than 450 submissions nationwide, Elkins was one of only 60 teams chosen to advance. The challenge was open to students in grades six through 12 at public, private, and charter schools throughout the U.S. and its territories. The winners receive $1,500 to build their experiment, a flight box to house it in, and technical support from Future Engineers, a host of online innovation challenges for K-12 students.

Sixty-two Fort Bend ISD teachers were among the nearly three hundred educators honored at the 37th annual Teachers Awards and Recognition Ceremony, hosted this month by the Houston Area Alliance of Black Educators (HAABSE).

Baines Middle School students extend kindness to Houston youth, donate hundreds of lunches
Baines Middle School students who are members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes set a goal of filling 100 lunch bags with food to donate to Kids’ Meals Inc. in Houston, but they ended up doubling that goal.
As the students began working on filling 100 bags, donations began to pour in, and they filled about 200. The students decorated the brown bags before stuffing them with drinks, fruit cups, snacks and other items for the children receiving them.

Kempner High School football team earns sportsmanship award from Touchdown Club of Houston
Kempner High School’s football team earned 3rd place in the 2023 5A Sportsmanship Award, given by the Touchdown Club of Houston.

The award is given to varsity football teams from across the greater Houston area that exhibit sportsmanship, as judged by referees. Teams are judged by the behaviors of their coaches, players, support personnel, the number of personal and unsportsmanlike fouls, and respect for the American flag.

Destination Imagination provides students with opportunities for creativity, friendships for a lifetime
Fort Bend ISD is expected to have 30 teams competing in this year’s regional Destination Imagination (DI) competition.

District students will gather with students from Cypress-Fairbanks, Friendswood and Katy school districts on Saturday, February 17 at Dulles middle and high schools (500 and 550 Dulles Ave., Sugar Land 77478), as FBISD hosts the Gulf Coast regional DI tournament.

Whole Child Health Initiative presents "Study Habits and Test Anxiety" on February 21
Parents and caregivers will be equipped with research-based strategies and tools to help students better prepare for school, state and national assessments. Information will also be shared about test anxiety symptoms, district and campus-based support systems to address it, and best practices regarding how to lower and minimize anxiety.

FBISD Small Business Enterprise Program to hold next focus group meeting on February 28
Fort Bend ISD’s Small Business Enterprise Program will hold its next virtual focus group meeting on Wednesday, February 28 at 2 p.m. on Zoom.
The meeting will focus on bonding and insurance criteria for all vendors interested in doing business with the district.
FBISD’s Director of Risk Management Bridget Chustz-Morrison will be the featured speaker.

The federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program is currently providing income-eligible families with $30 discounts on their monthly internet bills and a one-time $100 discount on the price of laptops and tablets.
