Dear friends,

Recovery Transforms Everything

You and I know first-hand how transformative addiction recovery can be for those of us who suffer. But did you know that individual/family recovery, and addiction recovery services in general, are transforming traditional healthcare models?

Our Certified Peer Support Specialists provide services in 9 Upstate emergency departments, offering a holistic approach to treating substance use disorders that focuses on addressing the physical, psychological, and social aspects of addiction. The services that FAVOR’s Peer Support Specialist provide go beyond treating the symptoms, and support individuals in achieving long-term recovery and improved overall well-being.

On October 26, 2023, Prisma Health awarded FAVOR Upstate the Healthcare Transformation Award, acknowledging our successful partnership and our joint impact on the health and wellness of our Upstate communities. We’re exceptionally grateful for the recognition from Prisma Health and look forward to jointly providing everyone in the Upstate a fighting chance at recovery! Pick up the latest edition of Town Magazine and read more about our partnership.

With love and support,

Lesley

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Trauma &

Resiliency Relating to Substance Use Disorder

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stored in our body even if we cannot remember the incident. Our reactions are shaped by the human nervous system- which trauma can severely impact.

Trauma can manifest as risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol misuse, violence and substance use disorder unless addressed and worked through.

Building resilience is key to negating these serious effects. Learning and being knowledgeable about the effects of trauma on the brain is vital to building resilience in ourselves, healing our families and strengthening our communities.

Volunteerism

Meet Savannah, Volunteer of the Month

Savannah Cox started her recovery journey in 2018, and as most do, hit some early bumps in the road. Referred to FAVOR Upstate by the drug court in Spartanburg County over two years ago, she started attending meetings to fulfill the “requirements” assigned to her. What she found was a community that was welcoming, non-judgmental, and refreshing. Savannah was no longer just getting her paper signed, she had found her home thanks to that referral. The meetings allowed her the opportunity to just talk, have an open and honest conversation in a supportive group setting, and find her tribe.

Meet Sheila, Ambassador of the Month

Sheila Snoody serves on the Community Engagement Team for FAVOR Upstate's Spartanburg Center. Since 2021 she has hosted four Hope and Healing Hours, served as a Table Captain at both of Spartanburg’s Gifts of Recovery Luncheons and has invited over 70 people to hear and learn about FAVOR’s mission in our upstate communities. This makes her our featured Ambassador!

FAVOR Upstate Featured Book of the Month

FAVOR Upstate houses a sizable library in the Greenville Center that is open to all. Stop by and browse our selection: if you need a book, take a book. Or if you have a book, leave a book. Special thanks to Beth Holladay-Edwards for volunteering her services to highlight a different book each month.

Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown

In Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown provides a guide to the many emotions and mental states that people feel. Brown says many people can only recognize and name three emotions: happiness, sadness and anger. This lack of vocabulary blocks us from being able to fully experience and share our feelings with others.
