Dear CRC Volunteer,
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Community Resource Center fights homelessness, hunger, and domestic violence in our community.
As volunteers, you are an integral part of our mission. Every volunteer role makes a difference. Thank you!
Part of creating a safe space for all of our participants is confidentiality. Please see below a note from our Domestic Violence Prevention and Intervention Department:
Carol’s House, our Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter, provides a safe place for people who are or may be in danger of abuse. Domestic Violence Shelters are also known as “safe houses.” One the key factors in keeping the residents’ safe in Carol’s House is that it is located in a secret or undisclosed location. When shelters maintain a confidential location, both Federal and California laws protect that confidentiality. Further, agencies who receive federal funds, including CRC, could risk losing funding if the location of the shelter is disclosed.
Carol’s House has been in operation for over 30 years. Hundreds of people have lived there and many more people have either been employed by or volunteered with CRC and have learned of the shelter location. That does not mean that it is “common knowledge” or should be treated as such. Sometimes, Carol’s House residents themselves may disclose the location to CRC volunteers assuming they already have that knowledge. Every effort is made to ensure that the location of the shelter is only disclosed to those who have a need to know and that those who do know of the location agree to keep that information confidential.
Your cooperation in protecting the safety of Carol’s House residents is greatly appreciated!

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: YOLANDA HIGGINS
Congratulations to
Yolanda Higgins
, the volunteer lead for the HB Registration Team. From Shakira, her staff supervisor: “Yolanda is my 'right hand.' She has been volunteering three days a week since August. I was out on medical leave and she started right after I returned. She volunteered to train volunteers and community partners so that I didn’t have to talk too much (due to my medical recovery). She also created training materials. With Yolanda’s help, this has been the best registration process we have had in my three years managing it."
Thank you, Yolanda, for bringing joy and hope to those in need this holiday season!

Holiday Baskets Registration Team
Our Holiday Baskets Registration Team is the first face of Holiday Baskets! The team of 12 all received special training and background checks. Volunteer shifts were five days a week at our office. This team faithfully makes themselves available to sign up families and individuals for the Holiday Baskets Program. With their help, registration has closed for Holiday Baskets, with over 1,500 families registered. CRC wants to say “THANK YOU” to the HB Registration Team for their warm smiles, computer savvy, and selfless service to families in our community.

Sunday FUNday Volunteers
Sunday, October 14th was a big day at our 2nd Street office!
St. Mark Church
sent a group of more than 20 volunteers of all ages for a work day! They washed windows, power washed the front of the building and the breezeway, pulled weeds and trimmed trees in the back alley, and checked expiration dates on food on the pantry shelves. Thank you St. Mark for your generous donation of time and “elbow grease!" Also on Sunday, we had our
Produce Good
delivery from the Leucadia Farmer’s market. A few times a month, CRC receives up to 900 pounds of beautiful, fresh produce donated from local farmers. Volunteers show up faithfully on Sundays to unload the produce into our Food Center. That same day,
Seacoast Church
came by with backpacks for teens, filled with the types of supplies that older kids and adults can use.
Volunteers play many roles here at CRC and we are grateful!
