Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

A month dedicated to celebrating Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States and their contributions to our culture and history.

Duke OPSD PRIME Summer Academy Student Receives 1st Place at Howard Research Symposium

Jessica Brinson received the 1st place award at the Orthopedic Women of Howard Research Symposium. Brinson, a medical student at Howard University College of Medicine, participated in the Duke Office of Physician-Scientist Development Summer Academy. During the program, she worked with mentors Paloma Liton, PhD and Daniel Stamer, PhD to investigate the role of ABC transporters in glaucoma. Understanding how these proteins work to control intraocular pressure could lead to new treatments for the blinding eye disease.

Use of Service Animals in Healthcare Settings

Laura Enyedi, MD shared a recent publication from the Journal of the American Medical Association discussing the history and regulations related to the use of service animals in healthcare settings, set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

2024 Catalyst Fund to Support Innovative Projects in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Duke University School of Medicine Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion has announced the recipients of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Catalyst FundThe fund provides resources for innovative projects, interventions, and programs in equity, diversity, and inclusion that have the potential to scale or translate into broader School of Medicine initiatives. A total of seven projects were selected, each of which will receive funding for a 12-month period.

Healthy Vision Month and Mental Health Awareness Month

Healthy vision month aims to bring awareness to the importance of prioritizing eye health by making healthy choices and getting regular eye exams. This year, the National Eye Institute is focusing on the effects vision loss can have on mental health and sharing steps people with a visual impairment can take to thrive in their daily lives.

Jewish American Heritage Month was established by a presidential proclamation in 2006 and has been celebrated annually to honor and draw inspiration from the profound impact Jewish Americans have had on our nation's history and culture.

A celebration originally held to commemorate the victory of Mexico over France in 1862, which has since become a celebration of Mexican-American culture observed in the United States.

Eastern Orthodox Easter

Many Greek, Russian, and other Orthodox churches will observe Easter on Sunday on May 5 this year.




Nurses Week

The annual celebration of National Nurses Week, which always begins on May 6 and culminates with the observance of Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12, recognizes the tremendous contributions of nurses.

Memorial Day

A federal (and Duke) holiday held to honor and mourn military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

ReSpectacle

ReSpectacle is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that uses the power of the internet to facilitate redistribution of quality, used eyeglasses to underserved communities worldwide. Donation boxes have been placed at all Duke Eye Center locations.
