Lanphere and Ma-le'l Dunes

Lanphere and Ma-le'l Dunes are part of the Humbolt Bay National Wildlife Refuge and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The dunes are home to a remarkably diverse array of native flora including rare and endangered plants like Humbolt Bay wallflower, and beach layia while others come with catchy names like sand spurrey, birds'-beak, reindeer lichen, and kinnikinnick. The Dunes are also home to black-tailed deer, bobcat, grey fox, and even porcupine.

Pygmy Forest

Pygmy Forest in Van Damme State Park is located 3 miles south of Mendocino on Highway One. A pygmy forest or dwarf forest is formed due to a phenomenon known as an ecological staircase when the growth of trees in the area are stunted by extremely acidic, low-nutrient soil. The 1/4 mile discovery trail takes you along the boardwalk through a forest of natural bonsai-like trees. Even the majestic Mendocino Cypress that would normally stand a hundred feet tall are eye level to most visitors.
