A Nature Mystery
This round object might seem odd -
It's not a nut; it's not a pod.

Altered by wind or maybe pawed,
Right around when ground is thawed.

Can you guess, or do you know?
Just read on--the answer's below!

PHLT to Merge with Pocono Avian Research Center
On September 1, 2020,

The Pocono Avian Research Center will be merging their mission and research activities with the Pocono Heritage Land Trust.

Thank you to everyone who has provided encouragement and support throughout this process! PHLT and PARC look forward to a rewarding partnership and the many exciting opportunities it will bring for the land, wildlife, and people of the Poconos region.
Internships Available Fall 2020
Research to Support Wildlife in Monroe County
About the Internship (A PHLT and PARC Collaboration):
Using data collected through citizen science projects (e-bird, i-naturalist), interns will develop an inventory of observations for each PHLT preserve, which will then be coordinated with Audubon Watchlist, PA Game Commission, state and federal lists for threatened or endangered species. Interns will work to generate a list of probable species for each location based on its habitat type, creating an essential knowledge base for wildlife protection efforts.

To be eligible, applicants must be attending college full or part time this fall and should be proficient in MS Office. Due to generous donations from PHLT members, each intern will be awarded a stipend intended to cover 3-course credits at their university (up to $2000).

To apply: submit cover letter, resume, and contact information for three (3) references by email to Jackie Speicher at info@phlt.org . Two internships will be awarded. Applications due Aug. 1, 2020.

Nature Mysteries Revealed!
June
This little seedling is a young basswood tree. The two weird "leaves" are the cotyledons, and the first "true" basswood leaf can be seen as it is just beginning to emerge from the center of the plant.
July
This strange object is the center of an American sycamore "seed ball." Once coated in fuzzy hair-like fruits bearing seeds, this ball is all that remains after the seeds have been dispersed from the tree.
Thanks for playing!
