Sexual 'First Responders' Track
Because sexual health and intimacy are impacted by a diagnosis of and the subsequent treatment of breast cancer,
patients with cancer often experience complications from the diagnosis or its treatment - and some of these do not end with the completion of treatment. We know that one area of concern involves changes in sexual health and intimacy, and that the ramifications can negatively impact the patient and his or her partner - both physically and emotionally. Despite this, access to specialized services to address such issues is not universally available. The NCBC seeks to address this need through targeted education to train the nation's sexual health 'first responders'. Come and learn about the field of cancer and sexuality and
how you can be the one to
make a difference in your center. Because less than half of patients seek help for issues, despite their importance in quality of life,
patients/survivors should have help reclaiming all of life.
This general conference track will:
1) Establish the context in which survivors experience sexual
dysfunction and describe the models used to treat them;
2) Discuss the biological and etiological factors;
3) Show valuable ways to assess and resolve a couple's
relationship;
4) Focus on talk therapy for survivors and their partners;
5) Review the non pharmacological interventions that can
improve
sexual function; and
6) Role play case examples with how a Sexual 'First Responder'
might interact with the survivor and his/her partner.
