TIFTON'S GLENN BURTON TO HALL OF FAME

The late Dr. Glenn W. Burton of Tifton was inducted into the

Georgia

Golf Course Superintendents Association Hall of Fame at the group's meeting last week at St. Simons Island.


	BURTON

Burton, who died at age 95 in 2005, was one of the most decorated plant scientists of his time. Among a long list of honors was the National Medal of Science, which he received from President Ronald Reagan at the White House in 1983.

While Burton achieved distinction developing hybrids of pearl millet, which increased food production at a critical time in regions such as India and Africa, it was his work with Bermuda grasses that made him an icon in golf.


MOORE

Grasses he developed included Tifway 419, the most widely used bermuda grass in the world for more than 40 years. He was said to have revolutionized the game for golfers and golf course superintendents in the South.

Also at the Golf Course Superintendents Association meeting, Chuck Moore of the King and Prince Golf Course on St. Simons Island was named Superintendent of the Year.

Moore, who has been superintendent at the King and Prince course since 2000, is a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.

EIGHTH STREET STUDENTS TAKE PRIMARY PUPILS

ON A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TRIP

Santa's "Blue Elves" from Eighth Street Middle School are helping make Christmas a little brighter for nearly four dozen Tift County primary school students and their families.

On Friday, nearly 200 ESMS students, who had collected more than $3,000, took 42 primary students shopping. They got to choose a gift for themselves, but then had to spend the rest of their money on gifts for their entire family. Each primary student could spend a total of $80.

Eigth Street Middle faculty and staff created the event to teach students the importance of giving back.

After the group took over the Tifton WalMart for awhile, the students all returned to ESMS for a gift-wrapping party. This is the second year the school and students have held the teachable shopping event.

'HEEEERE'S DOC!'

JOHNNY CARSON'S FORMER BAND LEADER COMING TO TIFTON

"Heeeeere's Johnny!" -- that "Tonight Show" lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, dominated late-night television across the country for 30 years. The 'Johnny' was Johnny Carson, the announcer was Ed McMahon, and the bandleader was Doc Severinsen.

Americans welcomed the always entertaining telecast into their living rooms week after week until Carson retired.

Doc Severinsen and his Big Band didn't stop performing after the final telecast; they hit the road and are still entertaining crowds today. And on Jan. 11, he's coming to Tifton for a 7 p.m. performance at the Tift County High School Performing Arts Center as a part of the ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

"Americans still prove their love and respect for Doc Severinsen by pouring into his concerts," ABAC Arts Connection Director Wayne Jones said. "At 90 years old, Doc still has the magic. He can hit the high notes, a result of continued commitment to his studio and refinement of his craft."

Severinsen will be joined by the Byron Stripling Quartet in the show "Trumpet Kings." Stripling is a master trumpeter with a gifted voice. He has played roles on Broadway and is a soloist for the Boston Pops Orchestra. He serves as artistic director and conductor of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra.

"Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Doc and Byron do what they do best, entertain you by bringing back memorable tunes from years gone by," Jones said.

A limited number of tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $30 for adults and $15 for students. For information, call Jones at 229-391-4819.

Jones said the Severinsen performance replaces "Tuesdays with Morrie" starring Jamie Farr that had been scheduled for Nov. 30. The production company handling that performance cancelled because of scheduling difficulties.

CASA PLAYHOUSES RAISE $13,000

Coastal Plain CASA 's annual playhouse fundraiser generated more than $13,000 this year for the organization.

Five playhouses were built, and $10 tickets were sold for the drawing held during Tifton's recent Hometown Holiday Christmas Celebration.


The playhouses were on display in front of First Baptist Church on Love Avenue during the weeks before the drawing.

The proceeds go toward Coastal Plain CASA ( Court Appointed Special Advocates) for children in foster care.

The winners of the playhouses were: Mary Ellen Bowen, D&D Construction, Melissa Limon, Katy Dove and Jane Walker.

The playhouses were built and donated by Northside Baptist Men's Ministry, the Tifton Fire Department, Tifton Self Storage, Freedom Trailers and First United Methodist Church Youth.

NORTHGATE LAKES LUMINARY

LIGHTS UP SUNDAY NIGHT

The Northgate Lakes subdivision will have its neighborhood luminary display this Sunday, Dec. 17, from sunset until.

The Northgate neighborhood association invites all neighborhoods in Tift and area counties to come them in welcoming the holiday season.

The entrance to the neighborhood is on Brighton Road between Highway 125 and Interstate Highway 75.

TREE OF LIFE SHINES

AT TIFT REGIONAL

The 2017 Tree of Life lighting ceremony was held last Thursday, Dec. 7, at Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC).

Sponsored by the Tifton Junior Women's Club, the event included a poignant candlelight service, live holiday music, a complimentary meal and a visit from Santa.

Hospice of Tift Area patient Marion Greene and his family were hi ghlighted in a special video presentation.

Greene of Tifton also gave a few remarks at the ceremony and conducted the honorary "flipping of the switch" which illuminated the tree.

With proceeds benefiting patients of Hospice of Tift Area and the TRMC Anita Stewart Oncology Center, lights on the Tree of Life may be purchased in honor or memory of a loved one.

SRTC RECOGNIZES

RADIOLOGIC STUDENTS

On Dec. 5, Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) honored its radiologic technology students during an award ceremony.

Thirteen students were recognized and received pins to mark the completion of their program requirements: Amanda Brown, Ashley Montgomery, Ellicia Stephens, Georgia Snyder, Hannah Hinesley, Kayla Labbe, Kaylee Ezell, Kelsey Drabenstot, Kristian Morey, Mallorie Johnson, Melisa Rodriguez, Nelson Miller, and Tony Hernandez.

At the ceremony, the following awards were given: Werner W. Waldron Outstanding Radiology Student: Hannah Hinesley; Outstanding Academic Achievement Award: Hannah Hinesley; Outstanding Clinical Radiology Achievement Award: Tony Hernandez; and the RTI Medical Systems Outstanding Student Award: Ashley Montgomery, who was also awarded a plaque and $100 to help cover registry costs.

In the coming weeks, seniors will sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists exam, and, pending passage, will be ready for careers as radiographers. These seniors, who have now finished all of their coursework, will walk in SRTC's next commencement ceremony Dec. 14.
