In the preamble to its 2017 tyre test, Evo magazine observes that "all tyres are black and round and keep your alloys off the ground, but all tyres are not created equal." Well said, and true. To help its readers find the rubber that best suits their budgets and requirements, evo has tested nine tyre brands in the popular 225/40 R18 size.

An analysis of the tyre that caused problems for Kimi Raikkonen in the British Grand Prix has found "no issues connected with the tyre itself nor with its use," shares Pirelli. A close inspection of the soft compound tyre fitted to the front left wheel of Raikkonen's Ferrari revealed specific damage in two places at the edge of the belt close to the internal shoulder area, however no damage was found in any other area of the tyre, and no signs of fatigue were evident in the belt and structure.
During the first half of the year, Michelin increased both sales and net income on the back of higher volumes. Net sales were up 7.5 per cent to 11.1 billion euros in the six months to 30 June, and while operating income declined 0.8 per cent year-on-year to 1.4 billion euros (with the margin down 1.1 per cent to 12.6 per cent), the tyre maker described this result as "stable and in line with the Group's roadmap." Net income rose 12.2 per cent to 863 million euros.

The government has launched its "UK plan for tackling roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations". And with it came the decision to ban the sale of both new petrol and new diesel cars from 2040. However, electric cars sales currently represent less than 1 per cent of new registrations. Therefore a lot has to happen between now and 2040 for this new rule to become reality. What is clear is that there is now real legislative momentum in favour of electric vehicles in the UK and that this will have an inevitable impact on OE suppliers and in turn the UK replacement tyre market.
The hybrid and electric cars market has seen strong growth globally as countries work to meet ambitious CO2 targets, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6 per cent. Scandinavian countries such as Sweden will enjoy exceptional growth forecast growth of 27.9 per cent between 2016 and 2021, according to research firm MarketLine.
This year, the Hixih Rubber Industry Group is investing nearly RMB 6 billion (£682.3 million) in its two subsidiaries, Shenzhou Tire and Tongli Tire. Two separate projects will see the creation of a new car tyre facility and a doubling of capacity for all-steel truck radials.
As of next year, new tyres will need to carry the 3PMSF 'snowflake' symbol on the sidewall in order to count as winter tyres in Germany. Colleagues at our sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung report that a new regulation which took effect on 1 June sets out that all tyres made from 1 January 2018 must be 3PMSF certified in order to qualify as winter tyres under German traffic regulations.

In order to give an impression of the kind of clientele Tire+ is attracting, it worth looking a little closer at the show's exhibitor list. With this in mind here are 12 of the biggest tyre manufacturers exhibiting at the events inaugural show.
A number of key changes are being made to Apollo Vredestein's European sales organisation, and the tyre maker has named three new cluster directors who will each take responsibility for a group of countries within the Apollo Vredestein network. The directors will be directly responsible for the implementation and execution of the company's sales and distribution strategy within each respective 'cluster' of national markets.

Don't get alarmed, but winter's coming. Rumour has it that it'll be with us in around four months, so best make sure your vehicles are ready. A method of winterproofing all too often overlooked in the UK is to fit cold weather tyres, yet although tyre makers would prefer us to drive on dedicated winter tyres, these remain a minority purchase in the UK and we don't expect any great change here. All-season tyres appear a better fit for the UK climate and consumer spending habits, and manufacturers and retailers alike have high hopes for this growing segment. Even Continental has come to the party. Check the August issue of T&A for our winter and all-season tyre feature.
