Greetings, Stony Lakers!
The countdown is on for Summer 2023 and we’re looking forward to seeing you and yours back on Juniper for another great season of fun!
To help you hit the ground running ahead of the long weekend, here's the latest from all areas of our organization:
MEMBERSHIP & OPERATIONS
Cath Kirk, Membership Director & Tom Pitfield, Operations Director
Our new booking system is CourtReserve. It’s a comprehensive, user-friendly online tool where you can do just about everything:
- Purchase your SLYC membership.
- Sign up for social events, sailing programs, tennis and pickleball clinics and lessons, and book courts for free play.
- The mobile app is excellent and works just like the web version.
We welcome the amazing Bethany Chittick back for another year to manage our club operations. We encourage you to spend a bit of time on CourtReserve to get used to its functions, and please use our website www.slyc.ca to find information you need.
For any questions or issues, Bethany will be happy to answer your email through slycinfo@gmail.com
SOCIAL
Jackie Hubbs, Social Director
Mark your calendars for:
- Opening Social – Saturday, July 1, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
- The return of the Dinner Dance – Saturday, August 12
More details to come!
JUNIOR SAILING
Dave Anderson, Junior Sailing Director
Sydney Rankin is Head Instructor and she and her staff are getting set to carry on our traditions of games, fun house days, banquets and more! Sydney will be sending a detailed note later today on what to expect on Day One, so please stay tuned.
Overall, sailing enrolment is strong with some afternoon classes at capacity, but space is still available in some morning and afternoon sessions.
- Waitlists are available if you can’t find an open date that works.
WEEKEND RACING
Tam Matthews, Weekend Racing Advisor
Rig your own boat or book a club boat and join us on the water for Weekend Racing, which is open to all! We’re trying out some new course locations close to the club this year, so it will be easier than ever to participate. Trophies can be won!
- Talk to our staff to get the inside scoop and keep an eye on our newsletters and website for schedules, trophy races and course details.
TENNIS & PICKLEBALL
Andrew Rush, Tennis & Pickleball Director
Welcome to our Head Pros, Aiden Quennec and Steven Wells, who will be supporting our full complement of Junior Pros and young volunteers. Through CourtReserve you can book clinics, lessons, and free play one week in advance. Our Tournaments will be starting earlier this year. Sign-up sheets will be at the Tennis Hut.
-
For a more detailed rundown of our tennis and pickleball programs and booking rules, please see our June 20 email.
-
Important clarification that some of you have asked about: in our previous newsletter, we noted that we will block off three 40-minute sessions for private lessons from 7:00-9:00 AM during the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday). This is just on one court, the other two courts will still be available for free-play bookings during that time.
OUR FACILITIES
Jason Colbert, Property Director
You’ll see numerous noticeable improvements around the club this year, both complete and in-process, including:
- New landscaping and remediated drainage between the Clubhouse and Court 1
- Expanded docks project (underway)
- New Opti rack at the Clubhouse
- New Zests and 420s
- New Coach Boat
- Surface repairs to Courts 1 and 3 and the Pickleball Court (scheduled for fall)
- New pickleball net
And a warm welcome to our new part-time Property Caretaker, Logan Durno. Logan is responsible for general upkeep around the club, including trimming brush and weeds around the courts, minor dock repairs, painting, etc.
-
You can help make Logan’s job a lot easier by picking up any litter or tennis balls you see and putting them in the appropriate receptacles... and tell your friends: “Keep it clean, keep it green.”
ANNUAL SLYC GOLF TOURNAMENT AT WILDFIRE
David Newton, Event Chair
For golfers and non-golfers alike! Extend your August long weekend! The SLYC Golf Tournament on Tuesday, August 8 is our major fundraising event of the year. Proceeds help to fund sailing and racquet sports equipment, including items in the list of club improvements above.
JUNIPER ISLAND SURVEY
Amy Jacobs, ASLC Liaison & Andrew Rush, Survey Committee
SLYC and the Association of Ston(e)y Lake Cottagers (ASLC) have undertaken a joint initiative to survey all Ston(e)y Lakers about many facets of Juniper Island, with an eye to understanding how both organizations can best serve the community in the years to come.
SLYC STRATEGIC PLANNING
Dave Bart, Fundraising Director
The SLYC Board has identified numerous priorities in maintaining and improving our programs and facilities, and is in the process of formulating a Strategic Plan for the club. We will be hosting two Townhall Meetings this summer and look forward to receiving your input.
- Please keep an eye out for dates and details to be announced soon.
VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is the lifeblood of SLYC. Board Members and volunteers not listed above include:

Andrew Parker, Nominating Committee
-
Beckie Bart, Secretary

Our club is managed by a volunteer working Board of Directors and volunteer Supervisors and Committees. Each year in August, terms end and there are opportunities for you to give back to the community in a management, supervisory or participatory role.
The Nominating Committee for next season is now active and we would welcome the opportunity to have a chat with you as an interested volunteer in any capacity.
We’ve got a fantastic summer ahead! Can’t wait to see you on Juniper.
Warm regards,
Greg Plant
