SENIOR CITIZEN DAY

August 21 is Senior Citizen Day and we are celebrating with an open house from 10am-12pm in the Downtown Library Makerspace. Learn about tools and services that can support lifelong learning, from 3D printing to one-on-one technology help.

Also on Wednesday, register for our Financial Planning session during the Community Zoom for Older Adults program. Click here to register for the session or here to find more offerings during the full-day event.

We encourage our senior neighbors to visit the Veterans Memorial Senior Center which provides inclusive programs that focus on health and wellness through a variety of social events, expressive arts, nutrition, fitness, educational, and recreational classes; plus social services support. BACK TO SCHOOL WITH RCPL

Redwood City Public Library is here to support student success in the coming year (and every year)!

While summer break has come to an end, there is still time to participate in the Summer Learning Challenge. Finishers are entered into a $1,000 education scholarship prize drawing. Bring your finished log into any library in San Mateo County through August 31 to enter.

As our students are preparing for the new school year, we wanted to take the time to remind you of all the educational resources available at Redwood City Public Library.

On our Parent & Teacher page, we have a wealth of resources for students of all ages, including research databases, eBooks, videos, language learning resources and more. For research projects, with curriculum-related and age appropriate online content, we offer grade-level and subject-level resources: find them on our Student Research page. For language learners, try Pronunciator, a fun and free way to learn any of 163 languages with self-directed lessons, live teachers, and more.

If you are a teacher, home school educator, preschool or day care provider who lives or works in our service area, you are eligible for a Teacher Card. With a teacher card, you are able to keep your classroom and personal use material on separate library records.

Please note: if you are a Brainfuse Online Tutoring user, the California State Library will no longer support this service after August 25, 2024. The library is seeking to reinstate an online tutoring service in the coming months.

Last but not least, if you are reading this and don't have a library card to access our resources, GET ONE HERE. Happy back to school!

NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION

There is still time to get your Early Bird tickets ($40) and optional limited-edition t-shirt ($5) for the Library Foundation’s 3rd Annual Pub Crawl fundraiser on October 9 in recognition of Banned Books week. Enjoy a variety of discounted libations and small bite snacks at participating establishments in downtown Redwood City and see Foundation representatives with two banned books at each location. Have a fun evening while supporting the library and local businesses and learning more about book bans!

According to the American Library Association data, challenges to books increased 65% in 2023 over 2022, with a 92% increase in the number of titles challenged in public libraries from the previous year.

Get your tickets today! Tickets are $50 after September 13.
