About the book: March 31, 1985. Two white patrol officers in search of a gang member followed a pickup truck carrying seven young Black men up a dirt driveway in the Encanto neighborhood of Southeastern San Diego. Minutes later, gunshots rang out, and the truck's driver, Sagon Penn, fled the scene in an officer's patrol car. The incident stunned the city. What followed would change it forever.

Join us for a very special evening on Tuesday October 1st as we discuss and explore Roger Rosenblatt's latest book, A Steinway on the Beach: Wounds and Other Blessings (illustrated by Fred Newman) with the author and the illustrator in person.

Three-time New York Times bestselling author Roger Rosenblatt shares a universal truth, wounds give us our life.

Over the course of a 49-year career, Roger Rosenblatt has written 22 books, 7 off-Broadway plays, and countless stories and essays in The New Republic, Washington Post, Time Magazine, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and on the PBS NewsHour.

In latter years he has adopted a form entirely his own, consisting of sections of lyric essays and narratives, akin to movements in music, each section drawing upon and building on the others. Now he gives us A Steinway on the Beach: Wounds and Other Blessings, continuing his probing of life’s gifts and obstacles.
