International Film Showcase

International Film Showcase

The March feature film is Oscar finalist from Italy. IO Capitano started in Orinda on 3/8/24 and will also at the Jarvis Conservatory, Napa on 3/16/24.

Synopsis: In this acclaimed and beloved film which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Garrone presents a “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy.

The story is told through the mind’s eye and experiences of two Senegalese teenagers living in Dakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage. Current Exhibitions

Harmonia Rosales: ΩA Omega Alpha

Through June 23, 2024

Omega Alpha brings forward a visually enriched narrative that reimagines the traditional imagery of the black body in Christian art to empower lesser-known subjects through the canon of art history. Interweaving the oral histories and stories of Afro-Cuban religions, Rosales' depictions of the black body illuminate parallels in classical Western narratives while confronting the historical language of the Eurocentric male gaze. Referencing Greek, Roman, and European imagery, Omega Alpha inverts the narrative of how faith and orthodox-based stories are told, envisioning a new beginning rising from an end.

Lisa Congdon: Hold it Lightly

Through June 23, 2023

Illustrator and fine artist Lisa Congdon's current work, Hold it Lightly, explores themes of joy, liberation, and radical inclusion, displayed on printed matter featuring her bold, colorful illustrations and hand-lettering. Created in conversation with pop artist Corita Kent, Congdon's work reflects the profound personal impact of revolutionary joy.

The Decisive Moment: PhotoUrbanism in San Francisco Bay, 1930s-1960s

Through June 23, 2024

Photographers interested in the ‘decisive moment’ often utilized the camera’s innate mechanical qualities to capture real-time experiences and explore modern art concepts of pattern, contrast, and light through the lens. The practice dominated mid-20th-century photography in the West. From the construction of the Bay Bridge to the revolutionaries of the Black Panthers, this exhibition features work by Ruth-Marion Baruch, John Gutmann, Pirkle Jones, Peter Stackpole, Brett Weston, and Max Yavno, whose photographs captured moments that came to define social urban history in the San Francisco Bay Area. This exhibition is organized in collaboration with Pier 24 and the Pilara Family Foundation.

Diablo Symphony Family Concert “Fiddling with Mads Tolling”

The Diablo Symphony and Grammy-award-winning jazz violinist Mads Tolling team up for a family concert, “Fiddling with Mads Tolling,” on April 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lesher Center for the Arts. Tolling will perform his violin concerto and Grammy-award-winning jazz violinist Mads Tolling team up for a family concert, “Fiddling with Mads Tolling,” on April 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lesher Center for the Arts. Tolling will perform his violin concerto Begejstring (Danish for “excitement”), commissioned in 2013 by the Oakland Symphony. Premiered in 2015, the “swing like you’ve never swung before” concerto for violin and orchestra dives into jazz, fiddle, and Latin styles with three movements, aptly titled “Possibilities,” “Understanding,” and “Jubilation.” The program also features two dances from Copland’s Rodeo, themes from Bruce Broughton’s score to the movie Silverado (conducted by Kathryn Crandell of the DSO’s horn section), and Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) by New York–based composer Missy Mazzoli. Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Spheres evokes the orbits of celestial bodies, with paths that cross one another, as it takes listeners on an exciting cosmic journey. Several harmonicas help transform the orchestra into a makeshift hurdy-gurdy—a medieval stringed instrument with a sound similar to a bagpipe’s—that evokes the motion of the planets as they weave in and out of each other’s paths. Local young string players will also join the orchestra and Tolling in several of his fiddle tune arrangements.

Tickets are available at the Lesher Center for the Arts box office (925-943-7469; 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek) or online through the DSO’s website at https://www.diablosymphony.org. Discounts for youth and groups of 10+ seniors are available, and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge to all concerts. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Pacific Chamber Orchestra

Pacific Chamber Orchestra Presents Bruch and Mendelssohn

Pacific Chamber Orchestra (PCO), Lawrence Kohl, Music Director, is presenting Bruch Violin Concerto #1 in g minor with violinist Livia Sohn, Mendelssohn Symphony #3 “Scottish” and Fanny Mendelssohn Overture for Orchestra Saturday April 27, 7:30pm Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church and Sunday, April 28, 3:00pm Bankhead Theater, Livermore. Purchase tickets at PacificChamberOrchestra.org.

Livia Sohn's prolific career includes performances with renowned US orchestras in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Boston; in Europe with orchestras in Berlin, Budapest, Prague; and internationally in Asia, South America, China, and Africa. Opus Magazine described Ms. Sohn as, “a stunning and compelling musician. The Strad Magazine notes, "Sohn possesses a remarkably lithe and transparent tone of exceptional purity.... Even when under the most fearsome technical pressure at high velocity, every note rings true with pinpoint accuracy.” The Post and Courier adds, "Music-making does not get any better than this."

According to Conductor Lawrence Kohl. “Ms. Sohn appeared with PCO some years back in a fabulous performance of Mozart’s Symphony Duo Concertante. Her performance of Bruch's Violin Concerto #1 in g minor will sing with the verve of the early Romantic Era explorations and with the lyric and passion of the later era's greatest compositions.” A Podcast interview with Livia about the Bruch, growing up in craft and of the necessity of classical music in our lives today can assessed at https://PodcastsByKohl.com.

Also on the program is Felix Mendelssohn’s evocative Symphony #3 “Scottish” and the wonderful Overture for Orchestra by his sister Fanny Mendelssohn. The Scottish Symphony was composed after Felix’s sojourn to Scotland in which he wrote home to Fanny, “The chapel beside it has lost its roof and is overgrown with grass and ivy, and at that broken altar Mary was crowned Queen of Scotland. Everything there is ruined, decayed and open to the clear sky. I believe that I have found there today the beginning of my Scotch Symphony.” The opening movement is a touching vision of the old world; the finale bright, glowing and happy. The entire work is a tone poem symphony as each and every movement flows directly into the next without pause.

Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn grew up in a well-to-do home where they both studied under the finest composition teachers of the day. She remarked about her younger brother Felix, “I have always been his only musical adviser, and he never writes down a thought before submitting it to my judgment.” We are fortunate to have her exploration into the orchestral world with her imaginative and forward look Overture. There are a handful of other notable instrumental works; a piano trio, a piano quartet and four Cantatas.  Fanny was most comfortable writing for the piano and lieder. There are 125 pieces for piano and over 250 songs!

The Pacific Chamber Orchestra is a premier regional professional ensemble that performs at Livermore’s Bankhead Theater and at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church in Lafayette. PCO’s educational programs introduce classical music to over 6,000 elementary school children each year and provides clinics for middle and high school music ensembles.

Begun by Music Director Lawrence Kohl in 1989 PCO has performed to critical acclaim in San Francisco, Walnut Creek and Napa. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “An electrifying performance. Kohl’s avid direction gave the music just the right blend of public rhetoric and intimate delicacy.”

Tickets for the April 27th Lafayette concert and the 28th performance in Livermore may be purchased at PacificChamberOrchestra.org.

We are looking for people who have memories or stories about the Park Theater, especially in its early years in the 1940s and 1950s. If you have any photos or memories to share or stories that you would like to tell, please contact the Lafayette Historical Society (lafayette.history@comcast.net) and we’ll contact you with additional information. For information about The Park Theater renovation project please visit https://parktheatertrust.org.
