A Few Words From

Richard England

Executive Director

The Hub on Canal + Jane’s Art Center

It's all about the kids this month. Many of you are well aware that we'll present the Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show on May 19 at the Brannon Center. This is our flagship Outreach program. It's the biggest, most costly, most ambitious and arguably most impactful program that we operate.

Razzle Dazzle began humbly in 2018 as the After School Fashion Club. The idea was straightforward—provide a fashion-oriented club alternative to middle and high school kids not interested in sports or more traditional clubs. Led by a beloved middle school teacher that first year, seven young people gathered at The Hub in the evening every week through the school year. They learned how to sew, design and create their own fashions. The reward for their hard work—and hard it was—was a NYC-style fashion show at the Brannon Center in May of 2019.

We muddled through the Covid years and emerged bigger and stronger and more experienced in 2022. A larger number of "Fashionistas" participated. The average age of the participants rose. A greater share returned with each subsequent year.

As our young designers prepare to show you what they've been working so hard on since September, this little program with the humble beginning is ready to roar. Guided by Elaina Johnson and her staff, this year's Fashionistas will present to Razzle Dazzle's sponsors and attendees a stunning presentation of original designs.

More than amazing garments will be seen on the runway on May 19. Amazing young people will be there too. All have learned and honed an artistic talent. All have grown and matured because they committed to something hard. A few have found a dream to chase.

The world today seems way too focused on what divides us. The efforts of these young people is something we can all get behind. Won't you please come out and support them. Show them you believe in what they've worked so hard to achieve. Be a sponsor (reach out to me) or simply buy tickets and attend. Razzle Dazzle is the week after Mother's Day. Grab your mom or daughter and join us.

Razzle Dazzle roughly signals the end of the school year but that end ushers in the wave of summer camp options you as parents and grandparents are confronted with. We are a bit later to the party than we wished was the case, but what we lack in timeliness I think we more than make up for in breadth and quality. Have a look at what we're offering. You'll find many new and different choices. I want to make sure you notice that we have a teen clay camp at Jane's in July. The full menu of choices is nearby.

The Art of Loving Earth:

Workshop with Polo Ramirez

Two-Day Workshop

Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26

2-6pm both days

All levels welcome - beginner through advanced

Limited to 16 students

In this two-day workshop Polo Ramirez will present a paddle technique which dates back to Pre-Inca time.

As in traditional Peruvian pottery making, Polo utilizes his hands and feet to craft pieces, employing simple materials such as clay and rustic tools like rounded rocks and wooden paddles. He doesn’t start with a preconceived image; rather, the shape emerges as he works, allowing the clay and the earth to communicate with him. In this workshop, Polo will demonstrate how to make a vase and a bird whistle, though time constraints will permit students to begin only a vase. Typically, completing a vase takes at least one week. Polo will bring some of his own pieces in various stages of completion to illustrate the entire process during the two days.

Meet Hub Volunteer Fran Bilotta

The Hub couldn't function without our dedicated volunteers. Fran Bilotta is one of our best. She brings a strong sense of professionalism and polish to her time greeting our many visitors. Because we so welcome her efforts, we're thrilled that she spends an above average amount of time at our front desk. In the nearby photo, Fran arrives for our recent Gala. Thanks for your contribution Fran!
