Pros and Cons of TPO Roofing System

TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin, a single-ply roofing membrane that covers the surface of the roof. However, the name is misleading considering TPO is one of a few different types of rubber, which usually consists of a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber.

Pros

1) TPO is one of the cheapest materials on the market today, costing less than EPDM or other types of rolled rubber roofing.

2) Its color is white on top, which can help to reflect the sun’s light and stop heat buildup within the building.

3) TPO resists corrosion and break down upon contact with numerous materials. It also doesn’t promote mildew or algae growth and doesn’t require pressure washing.

Cons

1) Different manufacturers of TPO products can make wildly different products. This means that you may get a good quality from one roof from one manufacturer, but for the same price you can find one that is very poorly constructed from another.

2) Some buyers may mistakenly believe that the thicker materials are better quality. Such is not the case as thickness has little to do with durability and they all wear out at about the same rate.

3) The rolls that TPO is available in are relatively small, width-wise. So while you may purchase a hundred feet of material, you are likely to have seams every 6-8 feet.

tpo

How often do you take notice of your roof? A worn roof is easy to miss. For those of us whose lives are a bustle, not many of us are looking up when rushing to and from our cars. With our years of experience at Evans Roofing, here are the signs you should look for:

• buckling

• rotting – holes or worn spots shown on the roof

• missing granules – bald spots on the shingles

• look in rain gutters for signs

• blistering or bubble-like risings

• missing shingles

• curling of shingle edging

• algae or fungal growth

• downward streaking and staining

• damaged flashing against the chimney

Memorial Day

Although Memorial Day has been engrained in our minds as a commemoration to our armed forces, the holiday used to be known as Decoration Day. Memorial Day is often recognized as one of the most celebrated holidays throughout the year, as its’ history dates back several centuries. It started in 1865 when northern abolitionist James Redpath organized schools for freed slaves in South Carolina to scatter flowers on the graves of Union soldiers.

Old BillOld Bill saysJune is the beginning of hurricane season. Hurricane preparedness week has given us insight on many precautionary steps to take to be ready:

1) Determine your risk
Find out today what types of wind and water hazards could happen where you live and then start preparing now for how to handle them.

2) Develop an evacuation plan
The first thing you need to find out is if you live in a storm surge hurricane evacuation zone or if you’re in a home that would be unsafe during a hurricane.

3) Secure an insurance check-up
Call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough homeowners’ insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat.

4) Strengthen your home

If your plan to ride out the storm in tour home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications. Many of these retrofits do not cost as much or take as long as you may think.

5) Complete your hurricane plan
The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. If you wait until a hurricane is on your doorstep, the odds are that you will be under duress and will make the wrong decision.
