Pros and Cons of TPO Roofing System

TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin, a single-ply roofing membrane that covers the surface of the roof. However, the name is misleading considering TPO is one of a few different types of rubber, which usually consists of a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber.

Pros

1) TPO is one of the cheapest materials on the market today, costing less than EPDM or other types of rolled rubber roofing.

2) Its color is white on top, which can help to reflect the suns light and stop heat buildup within the building.

3) TPO resists corrosion and break down upon contact with numerous materials. It also doesnt promote mildew or algae growth and doesnt require pressure washing.

Cons

1) Different manufacturers of TPO products can make wildly different products. This means that you may get a good quality from one roof from one manufacturer, but for the same price you can find one that is very poorly constructed from another.

2) Some buyers may mistakenly believe that the thicker materials are better quality. Such is not the case as thickness has little to do with durability and they all wear out at about the same rate.

3) The rolls that TPO is available in are relatively small, width-wise. So while you may purchase a hundred feet of material, you are likely to have seams every 6-8 feet.
