Etiquette Lessons from the Academy Awards

Hello Arden,

I’m looking forward to the Academy Awards this Sunday. There were several great films that I enjoyed watching including Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and more. It will be interesting to see who takes home the top prizes. It will also be interesting to see how people behave. This public event provides many etiquette lessons both positive and negative. I’ve written several blog posts with musings after some of the Academy Awards shows highlighting etiquette take aways and speaking tips for work and home.

Here are a few of the posts:

Etiquette Quick Tips

  • When you speak at a lectern with a fixed microphone don’t bend over it. It is meant to amplify a variety of voices and heights. Bending over the mic looks awkward and amateurish.

  • A suit jacket should be unbuttoned when you sit down and buttoned (all but the bottom button) when you stand up.

  • Never leave a stage unattended. If you introduce a speaker, wait until that person arrives on stage and then make your exit.

  • Let people have their moment. Whether someone is talking about something they are excited about or trying to make an acceptance speech, don’t interrupt or turn the conversation back to you.
