Tremont Greek Festival
The annual Tremont Greek Festival was held over Memorial Day weekend at the "Mother Church" of the Cleveland Greek community, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. For over 40 years this annual tradition has featured tours of the beautiful Church, music, dancing, performances, shopping - and of course, food! More pictures
Filipino Santacruzan
Another new one for me but this annual May event in the Philippines has also been celebrated for decades here in Cleveland.

One highlight is the Parade around St. Wendelin’s Church on Columbus Rd. The 100+ year old St Wendelin was one of the churches closed by Bishop Lennon and then reopened by the Pope.
Look for lots of coverage – photos and videos – next week.
Irish American Archives Society Walks of Life
The Walks of Life Award was instituted by the Irish American Archives Society in order to honor individuals of Irish descent who have made an extraordinary contribution to their community in their chosen "Walk of Life." The 2024 Honorees were toasted at a dinner reception on May 16. The honorees (above) were:

  • Thomas J. Coyne, Lawyer
  • Joyce Dever, Engineer
  • Marilyn Madigan, LAOH President
  • Sr. Catherine Walsh, CSA
  • John T. O'Neill, O'Neill Healthcare CEO
Paramjit Singh Remembered
Paramjit Singh was a Community Leader of the Asian Indian Community since he first landed in Cleveland in June of 1962. Being a Sikh, he has dedicated his life to doing good works and serving the needy. To honor his life, a memorial service was held at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Foundation in Richfield. I was greatly honored to be asked to give one of the eulogies. Pictures, video and more about Paramjit.

One of my fondest memories was of Paramjit wearing a green turban as he happily marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Fun with Maps - Jersey, Guernsey and the Channel Islands

In this episode of Fun with Maps, we look at the Channel Islands - especially the two largest islands: Jersey and Guernsey. The English Channel is the busiest shipping area in the world. Though small and not very populous the strategic location of these islands in the English Channel between France and the UK have made them very important throughout history - most recently in the Second World War when the German Nazi's occupied them.

It's fun that the people of the four main Channel Islands have animal nicknames - toads, donkeys, crows and rabbits. We explain why in the video. There are also connection to some famous people such as Les Miserables author Victor Hugo and Irish singer Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Of course we explain the connection between the island of Jersey and the US state of New Jersey. And, yes, we take a look at the Jersey and Guernsey cows!
