Essential Listening Chapter Four

In lieu of not having SDBS jams, the Tune Up started a list of "essential listening" bluegrass tunes curated by SDBS board member and outstanding musician Richard Burkett.
Here is Chapter four of our "Essential Listening."
This month features Lisa Burns, acoustic bassist extraordinaire in the Bay Area bands The Goat Hill Girls, Sidesaddle & Co, and many more, bass instructor both privately and at RiverTunes music camp, and is a former member of the San Diego Bluegrass Society.
What was one of your first influences in bluegrass music?
I loved Laurie Lewis and have all her albums. I guess I lean a little toward the Folk side.
Who is a recent influence?
I have always enjoyed Missy Raines’ playing. Once I saw her live, my bass playing changed immediately to something more creative.
Can you suggest music you feel bluegrass musicians and fans should hear?
When I joined Sidesaddle & Co., a fan gave me 16 cassette tapes (remember those?) of the Stanley Brothers. I think the arrangements and the harmony stack are important to hear.
Whose music would be a good starting point for listening and learning?
I recommend going back to the first generation bands, especially Bill Monroe, and Flatt and Scruggs.
As a musician, whose music are you listening to most?
Recently I discovered The King’s Singers (acapella group) and am loving them.
Who do you recommend for listening for the best band sound?
For a complete band sound, I would recommend the Tony Rice Unit or the Bluegrass Album Band.
What’s an obscure band or recording that you feel is an essential listen?
Anything by John Hartford! Or the John Hartford Project.
What new songs or bands have you been listening to recently?
Lately I have been listening to Trampled By Turtles. They have some beautiful ballads: Whiskey, Alone are some of the titles.
