May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the importance of mental health and the need for awareness, support, and education. This month is an opportunity to encourage open conversations and provide resources for those in need. By understanding and recognizing the signs of mental health conditions, we can better support ourselves and others, creating a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Thanks to everyone on our Behavioral Health department staff for their commitment and excellence in the care they provide each day for our patients!

For more information and resources, please visit Healthy Minds Philly or dial 988 on your phone to reach the Crisis Line. 988 Philly is your connection to free, confidential support during a mental health, substance use, or suicidal crisis. Building a Better Future with Heights Philadelphia

On May 8th, Heights Philadelphia and Esperanza Health Center celebrated our first ever cohort of graduates of the Health Equity Program. Nine high school students were recruited from 19 schools throughout the School District of Philadelphia to participate in a 15-week course which began in January 2024. The program enabled students to explore career opportunities in healthcare by experiencing day-to-day roles at Esperanza, including nutrition, mental health, dental, OBGYN/maternal health care, social services, and administration. Esperanza is extremely grateful for our partnerships with Heights Philadelphia, Penn Medicine, and Temple Health which made this program possible.

Meet Esperanza's New Diabetes Team!

Esperanza is excited to announce our new Diabetes Team! This team will be assisting patients with uncontrolled diabetes, supporting patients who have been newly diagnosed, and connecting patients with pre-diabetes to Diabetes Prevention Program classes.

  • Damaris Vega is our new Diabetes Coordinator. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience through years of working as a Medical Assistant.
  • Darlene Burton will serve as one of our new Diabetes Care Navigators who will be serving our English-speaking patients. Previously, Darlene served as a COVID Ambassador at Esperanza, then later as a Colon Cancer Navigator.
  • Rosemery Serrano-Martinez will also serve as a Diabetes Care Navigator.

Thanks to the Health Federation of Philadelphia for grant funding through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which will enable us to support our patients and clinicians, and prevent new diagnoses of diabetes in our community.
