Shaker Heights commander named Beachwood police chief


The city of Beachwood appointed Cmdr. Daniel Grispino from the Shaker Heights Police Department as chief of police for the Beachwood Police Department, effective Sept. 3, according to an Aug. 12 news release. Grispino is replacing Police Chief Katherine McLaughlin, who was hired in September 2021 as deputy chief and became police chief two months later, the CJN previously reported.

Beachwood hotel up for sale again, raising questions over proposed $200M project


The former Doubletree Hotel at 3663 Park East in Beachwood is for sale. My Place Group entered a development agreement with the city of Beachwood in November 2022 to demolish the building and build a $200 million mixed-use project, the Cleveland Jewish News previously reported.

Mayfield Heights resident wins gold in Pan-American Masters Games 2024


Elliott Ungar of Mayfield Heights won a gold medal in men’s pickleball doubles at the 2024 Pan-American Masters Games from July 12 to July 21 in Cleveland. Ungar, 74, and his teammate Pete Dobrea, who competed under the name “Old Timers,” won the 70-plus division for athletes with a 3.0 rating. Bruce Noggle and Don Trobenter won the silver medal.

Judge dismisses murder charge against man accused of killing Samantha Woll


Prosecutors have lost the opportunity to try again in convicting Michael Jackson-Bolanos, 29, following a jury deadlocking last month on two of four charges in the slaying of Detroit Jewish community leader Samantha Woll. Judge Margaret Van Houten sentenced Jackson-Bolanos on Aug. 9 to 18 months in prison for lying to police during their investigation into Woll’s death.

Former Cornell student gets 21 months in prison for posting violent threats to Jewish students


Patrick Dai, of suburban Rochester, New York was accused by federal officials in October of posting anonymous threats to shoot and stab Jewish people on a Greek life forum. The threats came during a spike in antisemitic and anti-Muslim rhetoric related to the war and rattled Jewish students on the upstate New York campus.

US beefs up posture in Middle East, warns an Iran-backed attack on Israel could come this week


U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a guided missile submarine to the Middle East and is telling the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to sail more quickly to the area, as the U.S. on Monday said it believes Iran or its proxies may launch a strike against Israel as soon as this week.
