Actress turned playwright explores RBG’s legacy


Rachel Zake, who lives in Pepper Pike, fashioned a career as an actress (“Anyone But You”), author and playwright in Los Angeles. Ten years ago, she returned to Ohio and Zake has now created the play, “The Prospect of Equality,” a look at U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that appears at Ensemble Theatre in South Euclid from May 24 to June 9.

College Now Greater Cleveland CEO to retire


Lee Friedman will retire as CEO of College Now Greater Cleveland after 14 years at the end of 2024. Friedman, a Beachwood High School graduate and Cleveland resident, who is credited with propelling College Now to unprecedented achievements, has a long and noteworthy record of transforming and restructuring many Cleveland nonprofits for the betterment of the community over her 40-year career, according to a news release.

Hudson-based Joann comes out of bankruptcy


Joann, the fabric and crafts retailer headquartered in Hudson, exited bankruptcy proceedings on April 25. Less than 40 days after Joann filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, its financial restructuring agreement received approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, according to an April 30 news release.

UN assembly approves resolution granting Palestine new rights and reviving its UN membership bid


The U.N. General Assembly voted by a wide margin on Friday to grant new “rights and privileges” to Palestine and called on the Security Council to favorably reconsider its request to become the 194th member of the United Nations. The 193-member world body approved the Arab and Palestinian-sponsored resolution by a vote of 143-9 with 25 abstentions.

Biden administration won't conclude Israel violated terms of US weapons agreement, AP sources say


A soon-to-be-released Biden administration review of Israel's use of U.S.-provided weapons in its war in Gaza does not conclude that Israel has violated the terms for their use, according to three people who have been briefed on the matter. The report is expected to be sharply critical of Israel, even though it didn’t conclude that Israel violated terms of U.S.-Israel weapons agreements, according to one U.S. official.

Brooklyn LGBT nightclub cancels Eurovision screening in ‘boycott’ of Israeli singer


A popular queer nightclub in Bushwick canceled its screening of Saturday’s Eurovision song competition after Israel’s Eden Golan advanced to the finals. Brooklyn’s 3 Dollar Bill, which claims to be the largest LGBTQ-owned nightclub in New York City, called the decision part of a “boycott” in a now-removed Instagram post.

Forward editor in chief to speak at City Club May 17


Jodi Rudoren, editor in chief of the Forward, will speak at noon May 17 at The City Club of Cleveland at 1317 Euclid Ave. Titled “Independent Journalism in an Era of Polarization,” the talk will cover the complexities journalists have faced in reporting on the Israel-Hamas war and antisemitism in the United States.
