Welcome to Equity Matters, a monthly newsletter from the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Equity Matters is distributed to faculty, staff, and students in the Duke University School of Medicine. In this issue, Michael Boyce, PhD, shares his work in EDI in the biochemistry field. We also share recent EDI-related news stories, resources, and coming events.

EDI Spotlight: Michael Boyce, PhD

After first joining Duke’s faculty in 2012, it didn’t take Michael Boyce, PhD, long to get involved in equity, diversity, and inclusion work — not only within his department but also on the national scene. In this month’s EDI Spotlight, Boyce, an associate professor, shares how his passion for the work led him to be actively involved with the Department of Biochemistry’s EDI committee since its inception.

Additionally, he has become a leader of a national program that seeks to transition scientists from diverse backgrounds into tenure-track research faculty jobs across the country. He also tells us about his love of travel, including a few upcoming international trips with his partner.

2024 Michelle Winn Awards Celebrate Achievements in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Duke University School of Medicine has announced the 2024 Michelle P. Winn Awards honoring individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion over the past year.

Registration Now Open for 2024 Equity Advancement Symposium

The 2024 Equity Advancement Symposium will be held on August 5, featuring keynote speaker, Marcus Lambert, PhD, from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. This symposium will bring the School of Medicine and broader community together to facilitate conversations at the intersection of science, diversity, equity, and inclusion. All staff, faculty, and students are welcome to register.

Centennial Spotlights Jean Gaillard Spaulding

The first Black woman to graduate from the Duke School of Medicine in 1972, Jean Spaulding went on to help lead Duke Health as an administrator, making primary health care accessible to low-wealth residents across Durham and beyond.

Study Links Infant Sickle Cell Disease to Disadvantaged Areas

A study led by researchers at Duke University School of Nursing and conducted in collaboration with the Duke University School of Medicine and other collaborators showed that one in every 350 non-Hispanic Black babies has sickle cell disease (SCD) and almost two-thirds of these babies live in disadvantaged areas.

Recently Honored Faculty Reflect School’s Commitment to EDI

A significant number of faculty members whose work focuses on health equity and reducing disparities were honored this spring with distinguished professorships. In addition, recently announced tenured and full professors and faculty award winners also reflect the exceptional achievements of faculty from underrepresented in medicine groups. The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion congratulates them all.
