After first joining Duke’s faculty in 2012, it didn’t take Michael Boyce, PhD, long to get involved in equity, diversity, and inclusion work — not only within his department but also on the national scene. In this month’s EDI Spotlight, Boyce, an associate professor, shares how his passion for the work led him to be actively involved with the Department of Biochemistry’s EDI committee since its inception. | |

Additionally, he has become a leader of a national program that seeks to transition scientists from diverse backgrounds into tenure-track research faculty jobs across the country. He also tells us about his love of travel, including a few upcoming international trips with his partner. | |

The 2024 Equity Advancement Symposium will be held on August 5, featuring keynote speaker, Marcus Lambert, PhD, from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. This symposium will bring the School of Medicine and broader community together to facilitate conversations at the intersection of science, diversity, equity, and inclusion. All staff, faculty, and students are welcome to register.

A study led by researchers at Duke University School of Nursing and conducted in collaboration with the Duke University School of Medicine and other collaborators showed that one in every 350 non-Hispanic Black babies has sickle cell disease (SCD) and almost two-thirds of these babies live in disadvantaged areas.
