Welcome to Equity Matters, a monthly newsletter from the Office of Equity, Diversity and InclusionEquity Matters is distributed to faculty, staff, and students in the Duke University School of Medicine. In this issue, Sarah Wilson, PhD, from the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, tells us about her work to address inequities in various communities. EDI Spotlight: Sarah Wilson, PhD


Sarah Wilson, PhD, always had an interest in fighting for justice and fairness. Starting as early as high school, she has long since worked to address inequities experienced by people in various communities. That drive still exists today in her role as an assistant professor in psychiatry & behavioral sciences at Duke.

In this month’s Spotlight, Wilson tells us about several programs she’s working on, including a new intervention to mitigate racial implicit bias in clinicians and a research project focused on health equity and access to health care for minoritized veteran populations. She also gives us a glimpse into her world outside of Duke, which includes performing as a Prince impersonator.

School of Medicine Celebrates Juneteenth

Duke University School of Medicine’s Black employee resource group, called ME2 held its third annual Juneteenth celebration on June 20. At the event, keynote speaker Damon Tweedy, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, examined the history of racism in medicine and science in the U.S.

Guide to Inclusive Practices for Planning Events

The Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion has a created a guide to help event planners and others at Duke University School of Medicine plan equitable, inclusive events.

¡DALHE! is an employee resource group serving university-wide employees who identify as Latino/a/x/é and/or Hispanic. To enhance our sense of belonging, the group’s webpage is now available in Spanish. Read about the group’s mission, ways to get involved, and resources.

Restorative Justice as a Framework for Well-Being

The Office for Faculty, in partnership with the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, recently completed a pilot program that provided training and support for implementation of restorative justice interventions in the Duke University School of Medicine. Alumna Heather Kim: Providing Affirming Care to LGBTQ+ Youth

During her psychiatry residency at Duke, Heather Kim, MD, helped create a gender care psychiatry elective that now, more than five years later, is still offered to residents. She’s currently a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she provides gender-affirming care to trans, non-binary, and gender-questioning children, adolescents, young adults, and their families.

From Nairobi to Duke: How Soccer Helps Researcher Build Bridges in Global Health

Growing up in Kenya, Charles Muiruri, PhD, MPH, honed his skills on the soccer pitch before venturing abroad to pursue a career in information technology. His eventual arrival in North Carolina marked a pivotal chapter in his life's story to become a population health professor revolutionizing health care for those living with HIV and chronic health conditions.

2024-25 Teaching for Equity Fellows Program

Faculty are invited to apply for the 2024-2025 Teaching for Equity Fellowship (TFEF) program. TFEF is a year-long series of intensive workshops that prepare educators to better engage all learners in our classrooms, clinics, and other learning environments. Application deadline: June 28.

2024 Dean’s Staff Award Winners Named

Four staff members from the School of Medicine have been named recipients of the Dean’s Staff Awards for 2024. The awards recognize exemplary staff supporting the school’s mission and values.
