The building was abuzz with activity throughout the week of Chanukah! Students in every division celebrated in age-appropriate ways, feeling the joy and meaning of the chag and bringing much needed light this holiday. Below is a glimpse of the thoughtful and enjoyable Chanukah programming that took place at JKHA and RKYHS so far on Chanukah. One more day to go tomorrow!!
All of JKHA and RKYHS gathered yesteday on the grassy knoll at the front of the school campus for a menorah lighting all together - filled with singing, dancing and our collective Jewish pride on full display!

Our Third Grade lit up the stage with a rousing performance in JKHA’s annual Chanukah production. Our students told the story of Chanukah in Hebrew, sang festive songs, and danced across the stage in blacklight dance numbers. Thank you to music teacher Sharon Kintslinger for her musical guidance and to all of the teachers who helped make this play so special. It was a magical experience for all in attendance.
|
Our first through fourth Graders had the opportunity to experience a hands on activity to enhance their understanding of the miracle of the oil which lasted eight days. The children extracted oil from olives by actually using a hand press. They learned about a centrifuge and how it purifies and distills the different components of the juice which comes from the olive. The program truly made an “impression” on our students which will help to keep the light of Chanukah burning in their hearts for years to come.

The joy and excitement of Chanukah was expressed in many programs and activities throughout Chanukah. Students kicked off Chanukah as they were filled with enthusiastic singing and dancing at a Chanukah-themed Shabbat Assembly in Early Childhood and Lower School. Everyone gathered in the Epstein-Stein Auditorium for a school-wide Super Mega Dreidel tournament later in the week. The champions from the competitions held in each class joined together on the auditorium stage for this final tournament that crowned Kindergarten student Jacob Josephs the champion!

|
Students took part in Chanukah Chesed during the week. Early Childhood was excited to bake cookies that were then packaged up by Lower School students. All of the students made cards that will be distributed through Jewish Relief Agency (JRA) to homebound seniors.

Fourth grade has been learning about different kinds of circuits and defining conductors and insulators. Students showed much creativity on their culminating menorah project where they designed, constructed and wired their own menorahs including a switch. They held a special ceremony during Chanukah to "light" the menorahs with Lower School. The candle lighting was enhanced by a Chanukah performance from the Lower School choir.
Throughout the week of Chanukah, Early Childhood and Lower School classes have been decorating their doors to keep the festive feel throughout the halls. There has been so much creativity in their decorations. A panel of judges voted today on the best door decor and the winner will be announced tomorrow morning. The winning class will receive a special prize next week!

The second Grade students came together this week to share in an amazing, integrated, grade-wide Chanukah Extravaganza. Students made connections from their Judaic to their General Studies classes.. Students had the opportunity to compare and contrast the story of the Maccabim with the story of the Pilgrims, finding many similarities and differences between the stories. Additionally, students played a fun and interactive Chanukah Kahoot game on their Ipads , created and decorated a beautiful 3D hanging dreidel craft and participated in a fun dreidel competition with their classmates.
|
This week saw the first ever Middle School Hackathon. Groups of students were tasked with coding a solution in Scratch or Python (depedning on their grade level), to solve a Chanukah challenge in groups in a fixed ammount of time. They all showed such skill, tenacity, and ingenuity!
Our 8th grade buddy program, MiddotMentors, pairs 8th grade with 5th grade students to build and foster community in the Middle School. The 8th graders and their 5th grade buddies met this week for a Chanukah activity. They played a creative version of the dreidel game in order to get better acquainted with one another. Students had a blast with their buddies!

|
Our Bnot Sherut planned an amazing Chanukah carnival with Hebrew activities for EC and Lower School that was run by the 8th grade girls. Our 8th grade girls enjoyed their leadership roles as they created Chanukah-themed face painting, led dreidel-themed games, Menorah ring toss, a Chanukah candle challenge, and more!
Middle School went on a Chanukah STEM scavenger hunt around the building. Teams were tasked with locating a variety of scientific examples around the building and to photograph or record it, such as a video with an inclined plane, the sound of something with friction, and more. At the end of the "hunt" teams returned to the Rosenberg Beit Midrash and had to then build something with the given materials that either flies, floats, or spins!
| |
|
The talented students of Middle School showed their skills for a Kushner’s Got Talent competition. Middle School students submitted videos displaying their talents from piano, comedy, drums, singing, trivia and more. Teachers also showed off their talents with their own submissions. Middle School Students then voted to pick a winner.
Middle Schoolers enjoyed a festive photo challenge all over the building yesterday. Accompanied by their teachers, they set out to complete each of the riddles taking a photo demonstrating whatever the riddle asked including making a human menorah, playing dreidel, showing appreciation to someone in the building and more. The photos from each completed task were put together into a final photo collage.

On Wednesday, RKYHS students had the honor of hearing from survivors from the October 7th attack on Israel. Shani Teshuva from Kibbutz Zikin and Rony Kisin from Kerem Shalom described their experience on that harrowing day. They spoke about the horrific and tragic events where they lost so many from their kibbutz communities and detailed some of the bravery and miracles that they experienced. Students were privileged to have the opportunity to hear the voices of the survivors, those that stood in the face of evil and fought through the impossible reality of the massacre and war. RKYHS continues to be committed to showing our support of these true heroes and the entire people of Israel.
|
RKYHS boys Judaic studies classes had the opportunity to help those in Israel during Chanukah. The students made tzitzit for members of the IDF that will get sent over to Israel for the soldiers.

|
There was excitement and energy filling the hallways of RKYHS as the students participated in the Kushner Cup. Competing in two teams, students are involved in a variety of skills, challenges and competitions as they vie to be crowned the victor. Throughout the day and a half, the teams are involved in activities that include The Great RAE-ce apache relay, gaga, chess tournaments, school-wide musical chairs, a Chanukah edition of Copped, basketball, and so much more. The competition will culminate tomorrow in the grand finale where artistic and creative talents will be displayed with student-created team videos, faculty portraits, banners, Memes, Tiktoks, team dance and lip synch and more.

|
On the sixth day of Chanukah, RKYHS students participated in a Chanukah Yom Iyun with the Judaic Studies faculty. Topics ranged from learning the complex halachot regarding lighting the menorah, to discussing the internal conflict the Maccabees felt, to a look at the miracles of Chanukah, a study of Yehudit, and much more.

The seniors in the RKYHS class of 2024 joined together for Chanukah mesibot at the homes of their teachers on the 7th night of Chanukah. Divrei Torah, delicious food and games were enjoyed by all!

During his recent visit to Israel, Doni Israeli, JKHA/RKYHS CFOO, volunteered and participated in a number of different chesed opportunities. His son, Eric Israeli (JKHA '02/RKYHS '06) and a number of friends created a boutique grilling operation to feed groups of IDF soldiers who are protecting Israel. Pictured is Doni Israeli who was proudly grilling and JKHA/RKYHS alum, Zach Blank (JKHA '10/RKYHS '14) whose IDF unit was fed by this wonderful chesed organization!
