With any luck, and more importantly, insight, one lesson from the layered crises of 2020 will be that communities need to enhance their resilience to epidemics, other natural disasters, and their associated economic and social fallout. Some elements of the news media have been playing an increasingly exploitative role in deepening the country's bitter political divides to broaden their audiences. But other news outlets and start-ups have been looking for a different kind of journalism that seeks to circumvent the divisions plaguing our political institutions and find common ground. Read more.
In the face of rising angst about the increase in homeless encampments over the past few years, one group is seeking to educate the public about the roots of homelessness and mobilize supporters. In January the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless opened its 2021 Virtual Education Series.
As the pandemic has continued, the population group most impacted has been older adults, specifically Black, Indigenous, and Latinx older adults. This disproportionate impact highlights the need to design tailored public health resources & outreach; reinforcing how essential an equity lens is when conducting engagement. Read more.

The American Society for Public Administration invites you to attend its 2021 Annual Conference online April 9-15. Recent months have provided serious crises to solve and tested our abilities to do so. Conference sessions, including one by the League, will delve into the most pressing topics affecting the public administration profession and provide space for new solutions. Read more.
To celebrate the ongoing work of past All-America Cities, the National Civic League sponsors a Hall of Fame Award to recognize an outstanding civic engagement initiative in communities since winning the All-America City Award. To apply, email the completed application to aac@ncl.org by Thursday, March 11, 2021.
Southwest Airlines is engaging its customers, employees, and partners to complete a collective one million Acts of Kindness throughout its 50th Anniversary year. Now through the end of the year, individuals can participate in the challenge by signing the Kindness Pledge and committing to doing Acts of Kindness for others. Learn more and sign the pledge.
