Synod releases 2023 Compensation Guidelines

The 2023 compensation guidelines are provided as a starting point for determining compensation for clergy, deacons, and staff. However, these are only guidelines. They cannot possibly speak to all congregations with varying financial and personnel resources and expectations.

These guidelines emerge from ongoing review of current salaries, salaries paid in other denominations, PORTICO Benefit Services, the overall picture of compensation, and synod staff’s ongoing work with congregations. There has also been comparison with teachers and other professionals with comparable education and responsibility.

Synod office update

Synod staff are working in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays, and are working either in office or remotely Mondays and Fridays. We are hosting visitors on the Minnesota Church Center’s first floor and in the sixth-floor synod office on a limited basis.

Road trip

“It’s not nostalgia that draws me to hang out with my colleagues from the more rural synods of Region 3. At least, that’s not the only pull. These days I am aware of the great divide between urban and rural areas that separates and isolates us from each other. When I ended up in inner-city Washington, D.C., in the early ‘80s, I was confronted by urban poverty. And yet, the types of disinvestment from rural communities, where main streets were being decimated by an influx of box stores, was very familiar there. The same impulses were driving an economic change in the most urban and most rural parts of our country, I realized.“

Church together, ... and together, .... and together

“Just a few blocks away from Lake Nokomis sits a newly renovated church on 31st Ave in South Minneapolis. Previously home to only Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church ELCA, the building now additionally houses Living Table UCC and Spirit of Saint Stephen’s Catholic Community. All three worshiping bodies have joined in an ecumenical partnership which is aptly named: New Branches.

When Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church called Pastor Sara Spohr as their senior pastor in the fall of 2020, New Branches was already blooming. Murmurings of joining multiple churches under one roof were already circulating when Pastor Sara first arrived, she recalls. She has since helped guide the congregation through its new partnership.”
