Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

During morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up it is important that we all work together to make sure everyone is safe and to keep things moving as efficiently as possible. Please pack your patience (especially the first two weeks when things are a bit slower than usual) and follow the guidelines below.

  • Parents and student drivers enter the back of the school off Tierwester and exit on Southmore. It's a one way drive.
  • Only buses are allowed in the front from 7:15-7:40 and 2:30-3:15 PM.
  • Do not stop on Southmore/Tierwester to drop-off students.
  • After entering off Tierwester, the left lane is for student drivers heading to the student parking lot. The right lane is for parents dropping off.
  • The right lane should keep moving up as it is possible. Pull all the way up. On the driveway stretch near the canopy, you should pull almost up to Southmore if it’s clear.
  • Do not leave gaps between cars. Pull all the way up.
  • Never drop off in the student parking lot. Cones will be set-up blocking the exit.
  • Be kind and respectful to everyone!
  • Watch for the admin directing traffic. Follow their directions and be kind!
  • Student drivers need to follow proper procedures to get a parking permit and should not park on Southmore for their own safety.

Electronic Device Policy

One policy with a minor tweak for Energy is our cell phone/electronic device policy. Since cell phones and electronic devices are a big part of how we interact with our school environment, we want students to develop healthy boundaries when it comes to using all electronics on campus. Thus we believe it is imperative to inform families of this policy before day one.

In accordance with our campus cell phone/smart watch policy, located at: https://tinyurl.com/EnergyDevicePolicy, cell phones and smart watches are required to be placed in a designated cell phone holder in each classroom upon arrival to the classroom. Students may take cell phones/smartwatches from the holder at the end of class, only. Cell phones and/or smartwatches will remain in the cell phone holder unless needed for instructional purposes, as indicated by the classroom teacher. Teachers are responsible for monitoring students for use of social texting, and social media, taking non-instructional pictures or videos, and watching videos that have no instructional use. If this policy is violated, the violation will be addressed with the student by their teacher and dean. Consequences that follow the Student Code of Conduct will apply.

Headphones and earbuds etc. are permitted on campus but are not permitted to be worn during instructional time or in the hallway during passing periods. They are permitted to be worn during the lunch period only. Bluetooth speakers are not permitted at any time.

Energy is an extremely high-tech campus. Students will have laptops and other high-tech devices in the classroom. It is also good to know that there will be some instances where teachers are allowed to have students use their phones if that usage is tied to classroom instruction for part of the period. Students will also be allowed to use their phones during lunch and passing periods.

We want to give all families this notice before the first day as we will explain the policy to all students immediately.

Of course, if you or your child need to communicate while they are in class, you can call the school at 713-802-4620 and we will allow the student to come to the office to call you.

It is our intent to provide your student with the highest quality of learning. We love electronic devices at Energy but want to set standards for acceptable use that will allow us to give them the highest quality of learning.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Lambropoulos or your student’s dean!

Dress Code

Please make sure that students are in dress code starting on day one! The entire dress code is available on the website, but below are some key reminders.

  • Appropriate dress
  • Shorts/skirts can be up to 4 inches above the knee
  • Midriff must be covered
  • No athletic gear (leggings, exercise pants, athletic shorts, sweats, etc.)
  • No holes/rips in jeans (this includes intentional ones that aren't see through)
  • No hats/hoodies on head
  •  Shoes need back strap

Energy call-outs are managed through the School Messenger App. With the app you can control which call-outs and emails you receive. School based communication fall under the "General" category, so we encourage you to make sure "General" call-outs and emails are selected so that you don't miss out on important information! You can access the information and link to download here.

Student Parking Applications

We will allow students to park in the student parking lot during the first two weeks without a pass. This means that students have two weeks to turn in paperwork and pick up their parking passes from the main office. All paperwork is available by accessing this link: https://tinyurl.com/studentparking24-25. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in the required documentation and payment to secure a parking spot. If your student starts driving later in the year, they can bring the paperwork and information to the main office to be assigned a spot before driving their car to school. Students should not park on the street in the neighborhood.

Chromebook Deployment

Thank you to our parent volunteers who helped make this week’s Chromebook deployment a huge success.

As a reminder, all Energy students must bring a district-issued Chromebook to school each day. Work with your student to develop a charging protocol so the arrive to school each day with a charged device ready for learning.

Students who still need a Chromebook should come by the tech office (A114) with $25 cash or a SchoolPay receipt (screenshot or print out) between 8:00-11:00 am Monday or during lunch on Tuesday.

Opportunity to take Spanish 1 & 2 Online

Is your student a self-starter? Do they enjoy working on tasks alone? Are they organized? Are they able to successfully complete tasks by their due date with minimal prompting? Then enrolling in Spanish 1 or 2 online may be a great opportunity for them. Our Spanish 1 & 2 classes are large this year so we are creating a special opportunity this year for students who are interested in taking Spanish online.

If you want to participate, please complete the following form here: https://tinyurl.com/EIHSOnlineSpanish by August 23rd for a schedule change. Students who take Spanish 1 or 2 online will be able to have an office period in a dean's office to complete their Spanish coursework independently or they can take it has an additional class and work on it at home. If you have any questions, reach out to your student's dean.

Senior EDD (Engineering Course)

Students started out a year learning to think like an engineer. In our scenario, residents who needed life-saving medication were stranded due to hurricane flood waters. Students worked in groups to design and 3D print an attachment that would allow them to utilize a drone to carry medicine safely.

The picture below is a group about to test their prototype.

Cohort 1 Entry Event

Students had a mini-entry event whose purpose was to start working together, listen to different ideas, and collaborate to achieve great results as a team.

In this challenge, they created a racing car that had to be propelled by a balloon. They had limited materials, but they did an amazing job, and the race was actually pretty exciting!

AP Calculus BC

Our AP Calc BC students are off to a great start! These amazing students were able to quickly and perfectly complete a comprehensive Pre-Calc review and are ready to dive headlong into 2 semesters of college calculus. This class moves at a college-level pace and these students are up for the challenge. We kicked off our curriculum with an introduction to key calculus concepts including limits, and instantaneous rates of change, and even repeated one of the earliest bits of calculus in history: using the idea of limits and area to derive the well-known formula for the area of circle. The circle bit takes some intuition and insight to figure out and these students demonstrated great instincts as well as had some fun with it.

Cohort 4 Principles of Engineering

Our students are off to a great start! We are leveraging their work in World History to guide our work with understanding the development of technology and engineering. This week we explored how engineering in the past created our modern, highly interconnected, tech-dependent world. Our students dove into thinking about things as interconnected systems, concept-mapped a system they depend on every day, learned how to perform (and created) a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) on that system, and presented their work and perspective to their class. In the coming weeks, they'll begin work with simple and compound machines as well as structural engineering work so they can be ready to build their first, big, cohort project!

AP Environmental Science

Here are the pictures from the AP Environmental Science entry event! Students worked in teams to create habitats for fictional creatures based on their characteristics and habits. From left to right, there is a mountain valley, a desert, and an arctic kelp forest.

The project focuses on the different interactions between living organisms, earth systems, and biotic/abiotic factors that make up the biosphere. The final deliverable will be a small-scale biosphere based on one of the principal aquatic or terrestrial biomes outlined in the curriculum. The driving question is “How can we, as environmental scientists, replicate a natural habitat in order to create a biosphere that sustains itself for an extended period of time?”
