Message from the Principal

Hello Thunderbird families,

June is here! This has been an amazing year full of firsts. While exciting and fun, I'd be lying if I didn't say that it was a lot of hard work that required a team of extraordinary professionals to pull off successfully. It also required wonderful students who work hard and care about each other and their school.

This week we welcome our incoming 6th graders and next week we say goodbye to our 8th graders. June is always a bittersweet time of reflection, happiness and some sadness, but we are all ready for a well-deserved break and some down time.

I hope you have wonderful summer, and we will see you in the fall. Mark your calendars now for the Feeder Pattern Block Party on Aug. 28.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Leyde

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS: PLEASE READ BELOW ABOUT UPCOMING REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR STUDENT THAT COULD AFFECT THEIR ABILITY TO START ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR 24-25

DON’T RISK YOUR STUDENT BEING EXCLUDED FROM STARTING THE 24/25 SCHOOL YEAR ON TIME!!

HEALTH CONDITIONS AND MEDICATIONS:

Please plan ahead with making any necessary doctor’s appointments now! Doctors’ offices frequently fill up at the end of the summer leading to delays in getting required care plans for your student to be at school. New care plans are required every year. Medication forms and treatment plans can be downloaded from the district website: https://www.spokaneschools.org/Page/2164.

Students requiring care plans/medication at school need to drop off required paperwork and meds NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2024 in order to prevent their ability to start school on time. All paperwork must be completed before medication is taken in by the school. We are expecting a high level of treatment plans and longer processing time. Any delay in receiving required paperwork and medications may push back when your student is allowed to attend.

Potentially life-threatening conditions such as all asthma, allergies requiring an epi pen, seizures, cardiac, etc. require all forms and medications to be completed, turned into the office, and completed by nursing staff before your child is cleared to start school.

Non-life-threatening conditions such as digestive disorders, ADHD medications, etc. are required to be in before we can provide requested services for your child. Just like life-threatening conditions, we are not able to provide care until paperwork is completed by the provider, parent, and school nurse and medication required is checked in.

Parents are responsible to alert other school programs that their student has a health condition and/or a care plan in place. Such programs may include, express childcare, after school activities, sports, etc.

IMMUNIZATIONS:

ALL students in Spokane Public Schools are required by state law to be fully vaccinated PRIOR to the first day of attendance (RCW 28A.210.080). If the student’s immunization record is not complete, the student will be excluded from school. If your child is exempt from vaccination, please ensure that your school receives this documentation.

If your child is in 6th grade moving up to 7th grade, they may require a Tdap vaccine before starting 7th grade.

Please note, if we do not receive official paperwork that shows your child is complete on their vaccines, they may not be able to start until that is corrected (either by vaccinating or completing an exemption form). Please verify immunization needs as required and make plans to see your preferred place to receive immunizations before the last week in August of 2024

If you are unsure if your child requires any immunizations, care plans, or medications, please reach out to either the Sacajawea office at 509-354-5500 or to school nursing at 509-939-0773 or HeatherD@spokaneschools.org. We are more than happy to help you through the process as much as possible.

Thank you so much for your ongoing assistance in keeping our students safe and healthy while at Sacajawea!

Dear Thunderbirds,

We are looking forward to a great year with you at Sacajawea Middle School. Throughout your summer, it is important to fuel your mind with good literature. Your teachers have created some exciting summer reading enrichment opportunities for you.

 ake the Plunge!

1. Fiction/nonfiction books

Choose and read two books, fiction and/or nonfiction, that are at least 100 pages or more. (If you aren’t sure what to read, the links below may help.)

Upon completing your independent reading books, you will complete a One-Pager project for each book read to demonstrate your understanding. A One-Pager is a way of responding to a book on one piece of paper. It is a graphic interpretation of what you have read.

ATHLETICS & EXTRACURRICULAR

Studies show that the more involved a student is at extra-curricular activities, the better students do academically. Sacajawea offers a variety of clubs and athletics for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. A variety of competition-based sports are offered to all 7th and 8th grade students. 6th grade students will be able to participate in Cross Country, Intramural Sports (handball, floor hockey, 3-on-3 basketball, and more) as well as Unified Badminton.

Please watch for the district email in August that will alert families when registration is open for the 2024-2025 athletic season. Athletic registration will be done through Final Forms and an email will be sent to families when registration is open and will also allow families to set up a family account if they don't already have one.

  • TO DO for ATHLETICS: A sports physical will be needed for participation. Click on the ‘physical form’ link below, print and take it to an upcoming well child visit, make a specific sports physical appointment or ask to have it filled out based on a past physical.  PYYSICALS ARE GOOD FOR 2 YEARS from date of exam.  Physical form

Sacajawea’s clubs are still wrapping up for this school year. The Writer’s Society has its final meeting this Wednesday. Art Club, Gospel Club, and Sac Alliance are meeting through June 12th.  In addition to these clubs, Sac offered a variety of clubs to all three grade levels this year: Drill team, Girls Weights Club, Cooking Club, Builder’s Club, Homework Clubs, and Photography Club are a few. Clubs are student driven and based on interest. Students find a staff advisor and then have a budget and constitution approved by our Associated Student Body to begin their club. We are excited to see what new and exciting community-building clubs our students come up with next year and will be looking forward to the return of many of our current clubs as well. Club sign-up is also done through Final Forms and will begin in late September.

PTG CORNER

As we wrap up this crazy year of many "firsts" for our school, we want to thank each of you for helping to enrich Sacajawea for our kids and teachers/staff.

  • Thanks to you, we were able to support almost 40 families over the holidays through our Sac Gives program.
  •  We celebrated hundreds of kids every quarter for making honor roll with yummy donuts, and showed our teachers and staff how much we value them with treats and surprises during staff appreciation week.
  • We awarded thousands of dollars in teacher grants for things like classroom book sets, art supplies, math whiteboards and STEM activities for our library.
  •  We will celebrate our outgoing 8th grade class with an 8th grade fun day, which will include ice cream from The Scoop, inflatables and yard games.

None of this would have been possible without your donations - both in time and money. THANK YOU!

As we look to next year, our first PTG meeting will be September 17th at noon. If you are interested in learning more about PTG, reach out to sacajaweaptg@gmail.com. Thank you for a wonderful year and we will see you in September. Best of luck to those families who are moving on.

Community Partners

About our Community Partner's Program..... We would appreciate you partnering with us in supporting the PBIS program at Sacajawea. There are 2 ways to participate and help the Sacajawea community.

  1. We ask that businesses pick one month of the school year to sponsor our PBIS program, with a suggested donation of $100.  When your business sponsors a month of PBIS, it will be recognized in Sacajawea “News You Can Use” email with a link to your businesses’ website. This email gives your business exposure to the families of the 800+ students enrolled at Sacajawea. We will also advertise your business for the entire month on our Sacajawea Middle School electronic reader board, located on Grand Blvd. at 32nd Ave.
  2. Other businesses provide us with rewards and tangible goods for students and staff.

If you are a business owner and would like to partner with us by contributing to our Sacajawea family with donations of time or resources please email Laura Treece at laurat@spokaneschools.org
