Wow. It's been less than 24 hours since I left Springfield, after a marathon final session that ended in the wee hours on Wednesday.
I'm going to have a LOT to say about this year's budget process over the next couple of weeks, but I think I'll wait until I've had a good night's sleep before I tackle this crucial subject. Stay tuned!
For now, I'd like to highlight some of the bills I passed during this session, which I believe will have positive impacts on the people living in our district and all across Illinois:
SB3768: Allows the Philip J. Rock Center and School to serve some children who have only visual or hearing impairments; previously, enrollment was limited to children who have visual AND hearing impairments.
SB3420: The Prohibition of Unfair Service Agreements Act, which bans homeowners and real estate brokers from entering into open-ended service agreements for a property that bind future owners to keep on paying for services they may not want or need.
SB3432: Gives the State Board of Education and the Illinois Community College Board an extra year to finish revising the training curriculum for Direct Support Professionals, who care for people with disabilities.
SB3460: Allows use of email and text messaging to send and receive rental agreements for self-storage units, and sets up requirements for advance notice and other procedures at the end of the rental agreement.
SB3284: Updates the factors a judge must consider in assigning child support, such as the parent's age, health, and work history, as well as the local employment market; also establishes that parenting plans and judgments are final unless the case is dismissed and makes court-ordered counseling subject to HIPAA protections.
SB3351: Establishes that an elderly parent and their adult child of the opposite sex with disabilities are not required to share a bedroom while living in federally subsidized housing; requires local housing authority to provide the largest permissible unit to the family.
SB3501: Requires the state to follow specialized outdoor lighting requirements to minimize light pollution when installing lighting in state parks, nature preserves, and recreation areas.
SB536: Expands the list of allowable investments of public funds that can be made by cities, counties, and other units of government.

Honor our fallen warriors at the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall in Glen Ellyn
The Glen Ellyn American Legion Post 3, in partnership with the Village of Glen Ellyn and College of DuPage, will host the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall now through Sunday, June 2, at the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. (Fawell Parking Lot C) in Glen Ellyn.
The traveling exhibit features a 3/5 scale model of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, standing 6 feet tall and stretching nearly 300 feet across – almost the length of a football field.
This powerful exhibit was created as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. It also provides access for people who may not be able to make the trip to see the original on the National Mall. To learn more and see a full schedule, you can click here.

Dip into the Cream of Wheaton TODAY
Kick off summer at the Cream of Wheaton, starting today (Thursday) through Sunday, June 2 at Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave., and in Downtown Wheaton.
The Wheaton Park District event will offer fun for all ages, including live entertainment, a carnival, beer garden, food vendors, an arts and crafts fair, a business expo, and a wide array of activities for kids. For more information, and to find a schedule of events, you can click here.

York Center Park District presents its first Concert in the Park TOMORROW
The York Center Park District will present its first-ever Concert in the Park on tomorrow (Friday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Knolls Community Park, 1416 S. Meyers Road in Lombard
The free concert will feature the band Final Say, and food and drink vendors will be on hand. You'll need to bring your own chair or blanket. For more information, you can click here.

NAMI DuPage will host its Mental Health Awareness Month Open House TOMORROW
NAMI DuPage will host its annual open house from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Linda A. Kurzawa Community Center, 115 North County Farm Road in Wheaton.
The event, which is free to all, will include hot dogs, ice cream, and beverages, as well as a jazz band and lots of games and activities.

Stop in for fresh produce, baked goods at the Downtown Downers Grove Market SATURDAY
You can enjoy some of the first fruits (and vegetables) of summer at the Downtown Downers Grove Market, from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this Saturday, June 1 at the Main Street Train Station, 5001 Main St.
Local and regional vendors will offer vegetables, fruits, baked goods and specialty foods, along with potted flowers and herbs. The market will be held every Saturday through October 19. You can click here to find more information.

Celebrate the start of summer at Lisle Library's Summer Read 2024 Kick-off Party SATURDAY
You and your favorite young readers are invited to join the Lisle Library in kicking off Summer Read 2024 on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lisle Library District, 777 Front St.
To celebrate the upcoming Olympic Games, kids can race through an inflatable obstacle course, attempt feats of structural engineering in the YS play area, and try to set an "Olympic record" on the Nintendo Switch in the library's Teen Area. Share your thoughts on indoor recreation spaces at Naperville open house SUNDAY
The Naperville Park District is planning the future of its indoor recreation programs, and they want your input.
To hear ideas directly from community members, the park district will hold open houses this month. The first one will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the Frontier Sports Complex, 3380 Cedar Glade Road.

Movie in the Park in Glen Ellyn WEDNESDAY
Join the Glen Ellyn Park District for an outdoor screening of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Lake Ellyn Park, 645 Lenox Road.
You'll need to bring your own chairs or blankets, and the Park District also suggests packing bug spray and your favorite movie snacks and beverages.
This event is open to all ages. No registration is required, and admission is free. Arrive at 7:30 pm for story time in the park with the Glen Ellyn Public Library and the movie will begin at dusk. For more information, you can click here.

Strike up the band! Wheaton Municipal Band concert season begins June 6
The Wheaton Municipal Band returns for another summer of music on Thursday, June 6, at Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave.
At 7:30 every Thursday evening through August 1 (weather permitting) the band will play a concert in the Memorial Park Bandshell. The concerts are free and open to all ages.
