Dear Friends and Members of Shadow Rock,
We are creating a new volunteer position to help us coordinate everything we do on Sunday morning. We are calling this position our Opportunities To Serve Coordinator (OTS Coordinator) and Liz Curry has agreed to serve in this capacity. Thank you, Liz!
We have grown the number of programs we offer on Sunday morning. This past program year we have offered Kindlings (parent group), Spiritual Play (children’s spirituality), Sunday School, Hospitality Cart, and Yoga. This is only the 9 AM hour. The 10:15 AM has a lot going on as well. When you add the worship hour you can see Sunday morning has many moving pieces and I thank all the people who have made Sunday morning such a positive experience for so many. Thank you very much!
Moving forward, we are committed to offering these programs and are open to creating more. To make Sunday morning happen we need a host of volunteers. Most of the recruitment and coordination of volunteers for Sunday morning has been done by Lois and me. While we have done a good job we want to bring more intentionality to this aspect of congregational life. I want to keep the question in front of us, “What do we do to ensure our friends, families, and visitors have the best possible Sunday morning experience from 8:45 - 11:30 AM?
It is easy to think of Sunday morning in terms of segments and pick and choose which ones we want for ourselves. I want to challenge this thinking. This is thinking like a consumer. Instead, I want us to think like servant leaders. It is not about us as individual consumers. It is about the people who are not here yet and we want to be a part of us. I want us to think in terms of the entire Sunday morning experience for everyone and anyone as a spiritual “bundle” for others. As Judi Adams in known to say, "There is value in the bundle." This translates into many opportunities to serve. Theologian Frederick Buekner is correct and I paraphrase, “When our gift meets a need in the world we experience our greatest joy.” We want to offer you opportunities to serve and hope you experience great joy.
Please look below at this list of “moving pieces” and see where you may want to serve.

Opportunities to connect with others and your service with your spirituality exist beyond Sunday mornings.
- Put your name on a list to drive people to medical appointments, provide meals while people are recovering from surgery, run errands, and be good company. We want to create a "Driving Force" for our congregation and beyond.
- Add your name to a list of people who provide stewardship for the needs and maintenance of our campus. This can include trimming trees, fixing a toilet, repairing an irrigation line, replacing light bulbs, and more things than can be listed in this space.
- Perhaps kindness and hospitality flips your gizzard in a positive way. We have events at Shadow Rock and we want people to act as hosts to the groups who use our facility. Coming up this fall are theater groups who will be on our campus for rehearsals and performances. Being a go-to person for their questions and lock the door behind them.
The number of people listed for each opportunity for Sunday morning and beyond is the bare minimum. Almost every opportunity to serve would be enriched by a team of servant leaders. We will provide training and coordination. With more than one person for each opportunity, it will give everyone a chance to take a break or be out of town. The true intention is to enhance everyone's joy.
If you want to serve in any of these opportunities you can start by having a conversation with Lois and Pastor Ken. Thanks and spread the joy!
