Hello Encino Neighbors!
We hope you are enjoying the beginning of your summer!
June gloom is upon us here in Encino. Many of you may be feeling a little depressed or anxious, Seasonal Effective Disorder is a real thing. Most places it happens in the fall and winter, but here in Sunny LA we have our own special version known as “June Gloom.” It can start as early as April and it is usually long gone by July 4th. It annoys tourists, makes summer beach days chilly and leaves a hazy afternoon layer in the sky that most people mistake for smog. We are so used to the sunny weather here in Southern CA that this seasonal marine layer really does a number on us all. But it does have to? So, what to do, let’s look on the bright side (no pun), shall we?
Well, we know we can’t change the weather but we can look at it another way.. the marine layer is surprisingly beneficial to our ecosystem, think of how hot it is in the rest of the country while we are enjoying summer life at a high of 70. We can laugh it off and remind ourselves how lucky we are to have a month of low utility bills; remember we will be cranking the air next month.
So, here are a few suggestions to help all of you Encino residents shake off the gloom and enjoy the weather. First, get outside! Enjoy this cool June weather while you can by exploring the amazing hiking trails at the top of Encino Hills Drive & Mulholland, The West Ridge-Canyon Back Trail (info) has some of LAs Most spectacular views spanning from Downtown LA, Malibu, Catalina Island and the San Fernando Valley, beautiful wild flowers are still blooming. Check out the historic Nike Missile Tower (info) for more fantastic views, shop the Encino Farmers Market every Sunday (info), Stroll the Sepulveda Garden Center (info), enjoy the gorgeous oak trees at Encino Park (info), go for a guided Audubon bird watching walk in the Sepulveda Basin (info), feed the ducks at our own Los Encinos State Historic Park (info), check out some of the new coffee shops in Encino and engage with your neighbors and before you know it the afternoon sun will break through and you will remember with a sense of gratitude why you live in Encino and LA.

Officer Walia’s Fun Summer Safety Tips
Summer’s here—let’s keep it safe and fun! Check out these cool tips to secure your home and property while you enjoy the sunshine.
1. Mail and Deliveries: Heading out on a vacation? Make sure to have the post office or your mail carrier hold your mail. You don’t want a pile of letters shouting, “No one’s home!” Same goes for those online shopping splurges—pause the deliveries or ask a neighbor to grab them for you.
2. Neighborhood Watch Party: Before you go, chat with your neighbors and ask them to keep an eye on your place. They can alert you if something seems off and pick up any stray packages. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get to know them better!
3. Community Connection: Build a little neighborhood squad! Stay in touch with those around you so everyone knows what’s normal on your street. Familiar faces, usual cars, and even the routine barks from dogs can help everyone spot when something’s out of place.
4. Home Alone Tricks: Set timers for your lights and leave a radio on to make it look like someone’s home. It’s an easy way to deter any would-be intruders.

Meet Aaron Yates, Recreation Facility Director,
Encino Community Center
Hello, everyone!
I'm Aaron Yates, the Recreation Facility Director at the Encino Community Center. Since August 2023, I've had the pleasure of serving our vibrant community by ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all. My goal is to offer diverse and affordable recreation and cultural activities for people of all ages.
From engaging with our youth through sports to organizing seasonal events like Halloween and spring festivities, my time here has been incredibly rewarding. I'm committed to growing alongside this community and am eager to hear your ideas, concerns, and questions about the center.
Let's work together to expand and enhance the programming at Encino Community Center. Your feedback is always appreciated.

Representing the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, Vincent Autiero is the new Neighborhood Empowerment Advocate (NEA) for the Encino Neighborhood Council. Vincent earned his Baccalaureate of Arts in Political Science from California State University, Long Beach and holds a Master's Degree in Education from Pepperdine University. Last year he earned his Doctorate Degree from UNLV with an emphasis in Public Policy. A review of Vincent's community involvement includes having previously served on the board of the Mid City West Neighborhood Council for five and a half years and a Budget Advocate for two years. In addition, he was a former active member of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Vincent currently resides in the West San Fernando Valley.
Prior to joining the City of Los Angeles, Vincent's career path was in the private sector, serving in the fields of education and business.
In his free time, Vincent enjoys networking and building connections within his community and is an avid supporter of the Dodgers and Lakers.

The California Audubon Society does business as San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, and was formed in 1906. Its mission is to promote the conservation of natural resources and to preserve and enhance wildlife habitats and biodiversity, to increase appreciation of bird life and the natural environment through education, presentations, guided bird walks and other activities, and to foster opportunities for a diverse population to come together for the protection and celebration of avian life. In addition to birding and related presentations, SFVAS is actively involved in habitat restoration and preservation as well as environmental education. SFVAS is partnering with the Santa Monica Mountains Fund to provide a series of classes on native plant landscaping later this year.
SFVAS will continue its family & beginner birding excursion in Encino’s own Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area, meeting on June 2, 2024 at 9 AM. Loaner binoculars are available at the family and beginner event. The 1st Sunday trips at the Basin meet every month at 8 am and generally go all the way to the Sepulveda Dam, often locating 50 or more different species of birds. The SFVAS birding events will be canceled in the event of rain.
