Dude, where's my server?
I am curious, Do you know where your server is right now!!! Is it gone ? Well....is it?
Please jump up and go check. I will wait….
Look in the server closet. Look even under the owners desk. If you can't find your server, it might be the best thing for your company. I said might, you still should call the police just in case.
Back to why I think this is a good thing. Disappearing servers is a trend that is accelerating each day. Even though I implied it, they are not being stolen. Servers are being removed from businesses locations and migrated into the "cloud". We at Noobeh do this every day for businesses. And the businesses are loving it.
For those who don't know, "cloud" isn't just a term to mean
someone else's server. Make sure not to get cloud mixed up with what has traditionally been termed as "hosted" service. While hosted also means it is on someone else's server, the server part is more primitive. Hosted does not usually have three copies of your virtual server running at the same time. Hosted does not allow for instant hardware upgrades (or downgrades) to your server. One of the main reasons to migrate your server to a real cloud platform is for reliability. A server running at your business location or in some rack at a datacenter is subject to hardware failures that you just don’t' have time for anymore. On-premise or co-located machines are still susceptible to hardware failures and are limited by physical resources, but a real cloud allows you to avoid all that.
You will eventually have a day when your on-premises or co-located/hosted server will not turn on. So, you contact an IT technician to come out and take a look. In a few hours he is onsite and inside the server room. Two hours later he comes walking out with a metal box proudly holding it up high by the splayed wires looking like Perseus who just killed Medusa. He will then say "I found the problem. The power supply is dead and needs replacing". After some hunting for the exact model, make, and size, he orders one, but it will not arrive until next Tuesday. Now, what are your employee's going to do for a few days that you have to wait for this server to get back up and running?
This is the nightmare that I have seen. But there is good news. Now is the time to think about getting your server removed from your location and deploying your IT in the cloud. Give me a call, as I would be happy give you a plan for making your old server disappear.
Sincerely
Mike the IT guy
