The Migrant Crisis and What You Can Do! Presentation at the May Social Justice Task Force Gathering

We read about the migrant crisis in the U.S. We increasingly see migrants on the streets of Evanston, Wilmette, Chicago, and wherever we travel. If you wonder what you can be doing and/or how to volunteer, this Monday, we will hear from representatives of Refugee One, JCUA (Jewish Council for Urban Affairs), and SaLT Wilmette Migrant Response. They will provide an update on their work and offer ways in which we as a community can get involved.

Kabbalat Shabbat Service: D’var Torah – “A Letter in the Scroll”

Rabbi London will offer her concluding D'var on our One Book One Congregation selection, A Letter in the Scroll, at Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday, May 24. Before the service, there will be a special Oneg sponsored by the Schachter Family in honor of Maya becoming a Kabbalat Mitzvah. After the service, a facilitated book discussion with an Oneg will take place. Everyone is welcome, and familiarity with the book is not required. Email Bekki to help with logistics. Celebration of Helene Rosenberg

Every year, many members of the congregation volunteer their time to plan and implement enriching programs, and we will honor one of our leaders in this area: Helene Rosenberg. She has chaired our Adult Education Committee for many years, encouraging diverse programming and opening the door to thought-provoking Jewish learning for members of the Beth Emet community. Celebrate Helene and her phenomenal accomplishments!

Challah Bake Off Shabbat Dinner: Here’s Your Chance to Be a Challah Star… or Taster

Miss the Challah Midrash and eager to show off your challah baking skills? Interested in sampling home-baked challot (plural for challah)? Here’s your chance! Sign up for the inaugural festive Challah Bake Off Shabbat Dinner, and if you bring a challah, you get $5.00 off per person on the dinner price of $18.00 per adult; $10 per child under 13; kids two and younger are free. Everyone who comes can vote on their favorite challah. Two categories: traditional and unique. Kabbalat Shabbat Services Commemorating Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day)

Given how difficult this year has been with the war between Israel and Gaza and attacks on Israel from Hezbollah and Iran, Cantor Young and Rabbi London invited some of our Israeli colleagues to send us a video about how they are marking Yom Ha’Atzmaut this year. We will air that video during Kabbalat Shabbat services. Cantor Young and Rabbi London will also share their thoughts and some prayers via video as they will be out of town. We will welcome Shabbat at 5:45 pm with a delicious Oneg before services, featuring the flavors of Israel that give a taste of unexpected and familiar favorites. On the actual day of Yom Ha’atzmaut, May 14, Beth Emet is cosponsoring a musical event (See Below).

Hope & Resilience: Celebrate Israel at 76 with Achinoam Nini

In celebration of Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day), Israeli musician and internationally acclaimed singer Achinoam Nini — known simply as Noa — will join the Chicago Jewish community for a celebration of song. Her unique fusion of 1960s folk sounds with her Yemenite roots and the jazz beats of her musical partner, Gil Dor, reflects the essence of multicultural Israel.

IDF Program

Listen to two Israeli graduate students, who are IDF reserve officers, tell their story. They returned home to Israel soon after October 7. They were courageously committed to defending the Jewish people and the land of Israel by serving in the IDF during an extraordinary national emergency.

Hey, Dessert Lovers!
Satisfy your sweet tooth and help raise money for the Illinois Holocaust Museum this Sunday after Beit Sefer!
Beth Emet 7th grader Emily Berger will sell cookies, brownies, and Rice Krispie treats by the Beth Emet parking lot next Sunday, May 12, around 12:00 pm noon, during pickup time after Beits Sefer. All items—cost $2 a piece.
Emily will donate all proceeds to the Illinois Holocaust Museum as part of her Kabbalat Mitzvah project. Buy Mom something sweet as a Mother's Day treat! Please bring cash to Beit Sefer on Sunday to take home some delicious goodies.
