Emergency Preparedness 101

Hello Micaela,

Planning and preparation is key to ensuring that you and your family are safe and protected during a natural disaster. It is the responsibility of every individual to take the steps needed to prepare for earthquakes, fires, floods or any other kind of emergency that may take place.

By assessing your own personal needs and creating a plan that fits them, you will be in the best position when an emergency strikes. The City of Indian Wells, in the spirit of September’s National Preparedness Month, encourages you to review the information below so that you can begin to prepare today and be best equipped for an emergency tomorrow.

The best time to prepare is now. By learning how to be ready and creating a plan, you take important steps towards improving your safety and ability to recover after an emergency. These are just a few of the tools available to you to help you Plan, Prepare, and Practice so that, if the time comes, you’re ready.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Hands-on training is one of the best ways to get prepared for an emergency. CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

Keep an eye out for sign-up notices for future trainings. For questions about CERT Training, please email Linda.Soto@RivCo.org.
