My first iris of the season

Eclipses and Irises

Let’s give it up for the fleeting, the rare,

the irises that only bloom once a year.

Let’s give three cheers for solar eclipses,

opportunities that, if not grabbed, one just misses.

Let’s celebrate the fact that bluebonnet season

doesn't stick around longer than reason

and appreciate how babies turn into adults,

how cats don’t stay kittens and dogs don’t stay pups.

In a world where our wants grow on digital trees

if you push the right buttons and pay the right fees,

it’s nice to know some things are still temporary

and won’t appear based on the credit cards you carry.

One click will deliver treasures galore,

but eclipses and irises are worth waiting for.

Peace & Poetry,

Carie

A Peek Behind the Prose

Last month, I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by Sue Bradford of The Muffin about my short story "Sam" which earned runner-up in the WoW! Women on Writing Fall 2023 Flash Fiction Contest. Book Bingo Check-In

This year, instead of setting a goal to read a certain number of books, I made two Book Bingo cards, which was way more fun. I've read 19 books so far (some were very short). Since I'm letting a single book count for multiple categories (such as Green by Alex Gino, which is both LGBTQ+ fiction and a book with a one-word title) I've already been able to highlight 31 of my 50 squares, yet I still don't have a bingo! I guess that's good because I forgot to decide what I "win" when I get a bingo or a blackout. Any suggestions? Hit reply and let me know how I should celebrate.

In Case You Missed It...

Wild About Wildlife

If you're not subscribed to my blog, you may have missed my recent posts about local wildlife. To read about my experience feeding orphaned baby raccoons and learn about some of the do's and don'ts of interacting with animals, check out this post. If you just want to see pics and videos from my trail cam, go to this one. Warning: some of the footage is impossumbly cute.

What I'm Reading

The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith

I'm listening to this fantasy novel about the librarian of Hell's Unwritten Wing, where all the books never written by their authors reside. (Chilling thought, isn't it? I definitely have some titles down there.) The problem is, some of the characters in the unwritten books refuse to stay put. Recommended for fans of Good Omens.
