Pi Mu Epsilon Society Journal Publishes WNE Student and Faculty Puzzle Solutions


Western New England University (WNE) celebrates the publication of two mathematical solutions in the fall 2023 and spring 2024 issues of Pi Mu Epsilon (PME) Society Journal. Senior Daniel Podzunas (Mechanical Engineering, Math) collaborated with Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics Cheng-Han Pan, Ph.D., to outline solutions to the challenging mathematical puzzles released with each issue.

Student Spotlight

Charisma Newmark, B.S. Criminal Justice

Charisma is a junior in the Criminal Justice program with concentrations in Equity and Inclusion and Victim studies. Charisma is highly active at Western New England University as an exemplary student and member of numerous campus clubs and organizations. Notably, Ms. Newmark serves as a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advisory Board (SAB) and is a member of the Criminal Justice Association.


Charisma noted that her professors in the Criminal Justice program- especially department chair, Dr. Lisa Muftic, have been instrumental to her success at the university. In addition to working with her professors, Charisma noted that working with the Orientation Group Leader (OGL) program at the university has been a life-changing experience and one that has helped her to develop from a shy, first-year student to a confident and outgoing upper-level student now. After graduation, Charisma will be applying to law school and is interested in practicing criminal defense and civil rights law.

Faculty Spotlight

Hanieh Shabanian, Ph.D.


Assistant Professor of CS & IT. Dr. Shabanian joined Western New England University in 2023 after earning her Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Memphis. Dr. Shabanian focuses her teaching and research on the topics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and computer vision and eagerly involves her students in her academic research. Dr Shabanian is currently teaching courses for undergraduate students as well as graduate students in the master’s program.


Dr. Shabanian recently submitted a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation to support her program of research and is looking forward to developing a new course in game development and development for Western New England University students in Fall 2024. Dr. Shabanian is delighted to have joined the faculty of Western New England University and noted that she deeply values the supportive environment in the CS & IT department and the University more broadly.

WNE Gives, our most successful campaign to date, garnered 75 donors and raised $23,233 in support of College of Arts and Sciences scholarships, faculty-student research initiatives, and areas of greatest student needs.
