Brand New Henderson Hospital Takes Shape
The 142-bed facility will create between 500 and 700 full-time, part-time and per diem jobs, Kaufman said. The fact that it's a brand-new hospital is the more obvious differentiator from others in Southern Nevada. It also boasts a UV-lighting system built into the ceiling to kill bacteria for purposes of infection control, and offers noise-reducing technology, which will bring a whole new definition to the idea of a "quiet" hospital. Health Insurance and Long-Term Care
Having medical insurance is no guarantee you'll be able to use it for mom and dad's long-term care. According to an analysis of health insurance plans by website Health Pocket, 99 percent of policies exclude coverage for long-term care.
That's likely because long-term services often fall under the category of custodial care. In other words, many seniors need help with daily living activities, but they don't have specific medical needs that require skilled care.
While medical insurance may not pay for ongoing long-term care, you may be able to get some short-term help for your parents as you determine how best to pay for their ongoing needs.
Health insurance, including Medicare, may pay for the following services:
Short term nursing home placement: Health plans may pay for a limited amount of nursing home care - 100 days under Medicare - for those who have been recently hospitalized. Coverage may only be available if skilled care, such as rehabilitation, is required.
Medically necessary in-home care: Health insurance plans may also pay for in-home care that is medically required, such as wound care or the administration of medication. In some cases, a hospitalization may be required for an individual to become eligible for these in-home benefits.
Hospice: Medicare, Medicaid and most private health insurance plans will pay for hospice care. Some private plans may pay for home hospice only and exclude coverage of services provided in a residential hospice facility.
Although health insurance isn't a solution to long-term care needs, it may provide families time to investigate other payment options, particularly in cases in which a loved one is unexpectedly hospitalized with an injury or illness.
This ends our email series on funding options for long-term care. We hope you found the information useful and were able to use it as a starting point for more in-depth research on ways to fund long-term care for your loved ones.

In 2016 the numbers of requests by senior females seeking temporary emergency housing has increased by 50% and because of the limited number of safe facilities to refer women to we are in the process of opening a 24 hour female only house to refer those seeking help. This will not be a shelter but only limited to seniors that are discharged from a valley hospital or referred by an approved social service agency or meet certain conditions
Since 2010 Elder HelpLv has provided over 20,000 free referrals for resources and/or services!
Elder HelpLv volunteers work in many ways to discover the needs of seniors and use the resources of their Preferred Provider Network to assist them through one-on-one surveys, a centralized 24 hour senior resource hotline, monthly community events, a weekly newsletter reaching over 5,000 recipients and the Curcarlin House which provides Senior Emergency Housing.
Elder HelpLv matches seniors with pre-screened elder care service providers based on basic information that providers make available to us.

Current supplement plan holders are eligible to be grandfathered in and keep benefits paying for Part B fees.
How to Keep Benefits
here is one simple truth that those of age 65 and older must know. Original Medicare (Parts A & B provided by the government) is designed to be the minimum coverage. With original Medicare, patients are at risk of huge out-of-pocket medical bills in the 1000's for care that isn't covered: Hospital Visits (Copays & Deductibles) Doctor Visits (Copays & Deductibles) Preventative Care (Copays & Deductibles)
Skilled Nursing Facility Care First 3 Pints of Blood Foreign Travel Emergency Care
This can spell trouble for most retirees that are living on fixed incomes.
How to Get Protected From Out-of-Pocket Costs:
A Medicare Supplement insurance policy, commonly referred to as "Medigap," is a private form of medical insurance that helps to cover the costs of healthcare that Medicare doesn't cover. You can buy a Medigap policy for monthly premiums that will pay for the Original Medicare deductibles, co-payments, co-insurance, and other costs when they arise.

Be There: Help save a Life
Whether you have a minute or an hour, a simple act of kindness can help someone feel less alone. The U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense have created a video to show how small actions can have a huge impact on Veterans and Service members who might be going through a difficult time. "Be There: Help Save a Life" features actual Veterans and Service members talking about the small actions by friends and family that made a big difference to them. This video emphasizes that preventing suicide doesn't require a grand gesture or complicated task.
VA has built the Nation's largest, most comprehensive mental health care and suicide prevention program to end Veteran suicide. This integrated effort connects Veterans and their families with services and support across VA through VA Medical Centers, Vet Centers, outpatient clinics, and Suicide Prevention Coordinators. Learn more about the resources available to Veterans and Service members in crisis, and their friends and families, at Veterans Crisis Line.net.
Nurses and patients speak about their experiences together under the EEOICPA program. Nuclear Care Partners specializes in caring for former DOE and Uranium workers.

According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the U.S. Census Bureau, America's senior population will double in size within the next 25 years. As our aging population grows, so does the demand for both in-home care and residential care facilities.
There are three main options for senior care: In-home care services, nursing home facilities, and assisted living communities. Below is a brief overview of what each option includes, and the associated costs.
In-home care: Just as the name implies, in-home care involves health care professionals coming into a home to provide services. There are two distinct types of in-home care: companion care and personal care. These are also sometimes referred to as custodial care and skilled care. Companion, or custodial care, includes transportation services, meal preparation, household chores and medication reminders. Personal, or skilled care, can be more involved and may include bathing and hygiene needs as well as assistance with mobility and eating. According to senior living referral service, A Place For Mom, the cost of in-home care usually ranges between $14-$24 dollars an hour, or $112-$192 for a full day.
Nursing homes offer the most extensive care a person can get outside a hospital. The cost of a semi-private nursing home averages $181/day, and a private nursing home averages just over $200/day.
For those who don't require as much care, an assisted living community can be a more affordable solution. According to Genworth.com, the average cost for a one-bedroom assisted living apartment in the U.S. in 2014 was $3,500 per month, or just over $100/day. In general, assisted living communities provide basic supervision and medical monitoring along with activities of daily living (ADLs) which include dressing, eating, mobility, hygiene, bathing, using the restroom and shopping.
The figures above are national averages, and vary by location.

"A Victim No More"
Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room. -Christine Todd Whitman "Adapting to Change and loss is definitely a part of the aging process, however; learning to adapt without feeling like a victim is something that we all need to pay attention to. Armed with some reminders; you can and will find that IT IS POSSIBLE to navigate these changes without feelings helplessness or hopelessness.
Since the first edition of my book, "A Victim No More" was first published in 2003; I have been busy teaching others how to escape getting ensnared in the victim mindset trap. Why? I teach this hard earned wisdom because I have found that creating an identity around your victimization is toxic and will steal the joy that you do have available to you on a daily basis -no matter your circumstances.
I am looking forward to sharing tools and coping skills in the coming months here on Elder HelpLv; that will assist and empower you to create more happiness and peace amidst the challenges that come with the aging process. And, yes! I do know that there are many! I will also give you real life insights and examples of how others have overcome many difficulties that you, yourself, may be facing at this time in your life. I will remind you that you are not alone and that help is always available.

To:
Curtis Davis Elder HelpLv
I wanted to thank you and your organization for the caring and dedication you brought in assisting us when my 89 year old mother fell broke her wrist and laid on the floor for 15 hours until she was discovered.
We were trying to deal with so many issues such as obtaining the help or panic button system, home health care and other services. It is a complex world in the field of elderly care and sadly not all companies who serve this group have the best interests of the patient at heart. The fact that ElderHelpLv has vetted certain companies enabled us to make informed decisions with confidence. We selected ADT as the provider of the emergency calling service and their local representative was not only at the house within an hour of our phone call, but was also professional and had been in her position for over two years. Knowing that not only we had ADT national service, but a caring local representative, and at a very competitive price made the selection of their service easy.
In addition to ADT we are working with Heal Care Professionals for other services that my mother requires. They appear to not only have the personnel but also the knowledge of how to navigate the VA maze of regulations for her to obtain the services she is entitled to.
Your group provides a valuable service to the community. The fact that you are always available by phone to answer questions is greatly appreciated by all of us in the family.
Sincerely,
Bill Cole
