Elaine in front, dressed in black pants and top
Even though it was our very first time doing Rat Pack songs together, Chase and I really clicked. There was a bit of magic happening on stage.
Elaine's favorite song of the night?
You Don't Know Me.
I love that song. It was written by Cindy Walker. Her story is pretty fascinating...
Cindy Walker was from Texas. Her dad was a salesman, her mom a piano teacher. When Cindy was in her early 20s, the family took a road trip to California.
They were driving down Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood when they passed the Bing Crosby building. Cindy asked her dad to stop so she could go in and sing a song she wrote for Bing, a very famous singer and actor.
Cindy walked inside but did not get a chance to sing for Bing. But she did meet Larry, Bing's brother, and sang a song she wrote, Lone Star Trail.
Bing ended up recording it, and it became a Top Ten hit.
True story.
And that's how Cindy Walker got her start.
She went on to write so many great songs. She's in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Country Music Hall of Fame.
And You Don't Know Me has been recorded by everyone from Ray Charles to Elvis Presley.
The day after Elaine's b-day blowout, she called and asked Chase and I to record You Don't Know Me. So we went into the studio.
The song turned out great.
We put the song an a single CD and gave it to Elaine one Tuesday at Vicky's. She loved it, Treasured it. Chase and I never released it, it was just our surprise gift to Elaine.
Soon after, Chase and I decided to go back into the studio and record more songs.
We ended up doing five tunes, and Slim People, they turned out really well. So we decided to release a CD.
It's called Pennies from Heaven.
