Entering Our 3rd Trimester

of Learning

Dear Eisenhower Families,

As we move into our third trimester of learning, I just want to spend time during this newsletter to stress the importance of making reading an enjoyable and fun experience with your child.  On that note, how we model learning is more important than what we are learning.  When dedicating 20-minutes each night to reading, it is important to note that we want our children to experience success and, more importantly, enjoyment with the time they spend with us.

Yes, recognizing sight words, correctly pronouncing letter sounds, and putting them all nicely together to decode a multisyllabic word is what we strive for in order to produce fluent readers. However, it is within this highly complex sequence that we most especially want to impart comprehension for the enjoyment and pleasure of reading.

When reading with your child take a few moments to scan the text and find words that you know they may find of a particular challenge.  Be prepared mentally to provide wait-time (patience) to allow them the opportunity to decode (sound out) the word.  If you find yourself in a situation where you need to provide assistance, take a moment to properly pronounce the individual and/or combination sounds.  Let them hear you pronounce the word correctly and then ask them to pronounce it back to you.  Upon completion, have them finish the sentence and ask them what they think that word means.  If they are having difficulty with describing what the word means, please provide them with a context clue from the sentence and/or visual in the story.  Please remember to follow up with your own explanation of the definition as well as share additional synonyms for that word.  It is very important that you use rich and descriptive language while discussing any spoken or written language.  The connections they make will astound you, as well as their own social and academic language usage.

However, as these learning moments connect you to your child, so too does your disposition.  Remember, to share stories with them.  Take turns reading, using plenty of intonation, developing character voices, pointing to pictures, and, most importantly, laughing. The most powerful encoding (learning) occurs when there is a positive emotion tied to it, whether it is love or laughter, I know we all want to share both of these during every moment of our child’s life.

As a reminder, it is our goal to see every child read a 100 Books with You!

It's time for some spring cleaning with our iPads! Please take time to update your child's iPad over the next week or two. Attached you will find directions on how to update your child's device. If you have any issues updating, please send a note to your child's teacher. They will contact the tech department to fix their issue at school. Thank you for all that you do at home!

Have a Wonderful Weekend,

Your Eisenhower Family

Report Card Update

The end of the second Trimester is next Friday, with spring and the final trimester on the horizon! Teachers are busy finalizing grades and comments for this learning and grading period, and report cards will be made available after school on Friday, March 10. Grades K-2 will come home with report cards that afternoon, and grades 3-8 will once again have report cards made available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal at 3 p.m. Here is what that access will look like! Do note, report cards are only viewable when accessing the Parent Portal on a desktop or laptop computer, not on the mobile app.

Winter Weather Reminder

Please remember to have your child appropriately attired with a winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarf. Students will be outdoors for recess unless wind chill conditions reach 10 degrees or icing occurs with changing conditions.  Only students wearing snow pants and boots may play in the snow. Also, please approach parent drop off and pickup as well as loading and unloading zones with appropriate spacing between yours and the driver’s vehicle in front of you.

As you’ve likely heard, D23 is asking voters to approve additional funding to improve safety and security, make repairs at every DIstrict school, and expand Eisenhower School, which is over capacity. This will allow us to offer full-day Kindergarten (FDK) for all resident students and create appropriate instructional spaces for programs that are currently being delivered in the library. The full library space will become available for its intended purpose and available to all Eisenhower students.

D23 will soon be one of the only D214 feeder districts without FDK. 79% of Illinois schools offered FDK as of 2015 and that number is increasing every year as communities including Palatine and Arlington Heights pass referendums to fund extending the kindergarten day from 2.5 hours to 5 hours.

FDK reduces the need for interventional services and helps narrow achievement gaps. Other educational benefits of FDK  include:

  • Increased academic instructional time
  • Additional opportunities to individualize instruction
  • Enhanced social emotional and behavioral skills because there is more time for cooperative free play and experiential (hands-on learning).

District Updates

Early Childhood

Early childhood students have been learning about numbers and letters this week as well as celebrating “Read Across America”. We have been discovering the concept of more vs. less, patterning, number recognition, and also practicing our counting. The students had fun playing a number recognition game where they had to use a shark to hunt for fish.  They worked on patterning with colored goldfish, built a city with numbered blocks, and sorted fish by size.

Kindergarten

The kindergarteners have been learning about geometry! We are learning to identify flat and solid shapes, to describe their characteristics, to compare shapes, and to build with them. We are also learning about position words like above and behind. The students love this hands on unit!

First Grade

First graders have been practicing telling time using analog and digital clocks. Have your first grader tell time using analog clocks to the nearest hour and half hour at home. They have also been working on counting coins. Grab a handful of coins and have your first grader practice sorting and counting these coins.

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.
