Getting our Hatred Right

August 11, 2012
Chicago Tribute
Scott C. Alexander

First it was candidate Obama emphatically professing his religious identity as a Christian. "The facts are," he once said in a 2008 presidential debate, "I am Christian. I have been sworn in (as a U.S. senator) with a Bible."

For the very few who may not remember, the Obama campaign repeated this and other similar statements in response to a broad-scale political attack fueled by the time-tested combination of unabashed bigotry and fanatical counterfactuality. The attack claimed that Barack Obama was a "secret Muslim." READ MORE.

(Washington, DC - August 17, 2012) Last week, ISNA National Director Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed spoke to a crowd of approximately 1,500 people at the Chautauqua Institution in the southwestern part of New York state. Chautauqua was originally founded in 1874 by two Methodists as the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly. It served as an educational experiment in out-of-school, vacation learning, and due to its success, broadened almost immediately beyond courses for Sunday school teachers to include academic subjects, music, art and physical education.

The institution now receives approximately 170,000 visitors over the course of nine weeks, providing them with a sampling of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. As part of their mission, "religious faith is perceived, interpreted and experienced as central to the understanding and expression of our social and cultural values." Dr. Syeed educated the audience about the history of American Muslims, how our collective identity has shaped, and how this fits into the pluralistic democratic society we have in America.

A group of interfaith leaders Thursday (Aug. 9) exhorted Americans to do more than pray for better times.

Representing seven different faith traditions, many advocated a period of public mourning after a week that saw a shooting rampage at a Sikh temple and a suspicious fire at a Missouri mosque. It is my hope that this is more than a time to express personal sorrows," said Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

"Our most concrete rejection of violence occurs when we engage the neighbor, the neighbor who is new in our community, the neighbor who worships differently than we," he said. READ MORE.
