Edmonds Arts Commission Open Position

The EAC has a general opening to fill a partial two-year term for an Edmonds resident who has a passion and interest in working with the cultural arts community. The current opening does not require professional experience in the arts. Appointed commissioners who fill a partial term position are eligible to renew for a subsequent full four-year term. For information and application, go to the EAC's Opportunities page. Deadline to submit an application is Tuesday July 9, 2024.

Thank you, Ashley Song!

Ashley Song leaves the EAC after six years of dedicated service to the commission. Song served as the Chair in 2023 and Vice Chair in 2022. She sat on the Tourism Promotion Grant Award committee, the visual arts committee, On the Fence selection panel, Bird Fest Poster Art selection committee, and was the EAC representative on the Creative District Advisory Committee. Her fellow commissioners enjoyed her humor and fantastic sense of style. Ashley credits her time on the EAC as inspiration to take up the paint brush, creating many colorful watercolors. The EAC wishes her all the best in her future endeavors!

Congratulations to Edmonds Arts Organizations

ArtsFund and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation partnered last year to create the Community Accelerator Grant program, a $10 million investment in Washington State’s arts and culture sector that provides unrestricted grants to cultural nonprofit organizations across Washington state.

The EAC congratulates the 11 Edmonds arts organizations that received funding this year. They are: Art for All, Ballyhoo Theatre, Cascade Symphony Orchestra, Cascadia Art Museum, DeMiero Jazz Festival, Edmonds Center for the Arts, Edmonds Driftwood Players, Olympic Ballet Theater, Phoenix Theater, Sno-King Community Chorale, and Steel Magic Northwest.

In Edmonds

Welcome to a new feature of the Arts Bulletin: In Edmonds. Along with the list of arts-related organizations and businesses, the EAC will highlight arts and cultural organizations, businesses and artists, and provide information regarding free-admission arts and culture programs in Edmonds.

PorchFest Edmonds

The 3rd annual free outdoor performance event in downtown Edmonds is this September, featuring musicians, bands, choruses, spoken word, mini TED-style talks, dance, and more.

The mission of PorchFest is to bring the Edmonds community together in creative expression on downtown streets and the surrounding neighborhood. More of an afternoon of coordinated yard performances than a conventional festival, there is not a specific enclosed or protected area.

Application deadline to be a Host or a Performer is June 30. For complete information, go to the website.

PorchFest began with the first ever event in Ithaca, New York, in 2007. The sole intent was to bring neighbors together to showcase local performers. PorchFest events took off after that all across North America. Festivals and events like the one in Edmonds are now hosted in over 50 cities in the US and Canada, including Tacoma and the Wallingford neighborhood in Seattle.

Edmonds Phoenix Theatre

Contributed by Arts Commissioner Ute Freund

Ever heard about the Phoenix Theatre? If you are like me, you wonder about the who, what and where of this long-standing Edmonds theatrical organization.

Tucked away in the Firdale Village shopping center on the 2nd floor, The Phoenix Theatre has been in operation in its intimate 95-seat auditorium for 15 years under the leadership of its founder, Melanie Calderwood. Created “from the ashes” of the former Edge of the World Theatre--which operated for approximately 20 years in the same location--Phoenix Theatre is dedicated to the inspiring and healing effects of laughter, and to fostering an appreciation for the performing arts by providing meaningful experiences for both performer and audience through live comedic theatre.

The theatre produces five scripted comedic plays each season with twelve performances for each production. The current production, Move Over Mrs. Markham, runs through June 23rd. Ticket prices are $20-25. Patients undergoing cancer treatments receive complimentary admission! Location: Firdale Village, 9673 Firdale Avenue. Website: https://www.tptedmonds.org/. Tickets available online or call 206-533-2000.
