SPRING 2024

The third annual call for short poetry that links the reader to our unique Northwest region was met with approximately 90 submissions by established and emerging writers of all ages. A review panel will select six poems by Puget Sound area writers, and three poems by Edmonds School District students. The poems will be displayed mid-April through next March as posters in the Frances Anderson Center, in the Edmonds Library, select outdoor planter beds, and on various park fences. The poems will also be viewed in an online gallery from the Poet's Perspective web page.

Poet's Perspective

April is National Poetry Month

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets! The National Poetry Month web site provides a list of ways to participate, as well as a place to list local poetry events.

Visual Arts Program

After three long years of shutdowns and closures, The EAC's visual art program is once again fully scheduled. As in previous years, exhibits by Puget Sound area artists are featured on a rotating basis in the art exhibit area of the Edmonds Library, in the EAC Display Cases in the Frances Anderson Center and On the Fence temporary art installations in two downtown locations.

Edmonds Library, January-June: a selection from the City's Public Art Collection, including two artworks that previously hung in the library (pictured).

EAC Display Case / Frances Anderson Center, April-May: Sculptor's Workshop annual exhibit is in the EAC Display Case and the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation Gallery.

On the Fence, March-August: "Brave to Be You!" by Ai-Chung Huang, 2nd Ave S & Dayton St, ArtWorks parking lot; "Tidelands" by Bill & Sharon Grader, 700 Main St, Frances Anderson Center Playfield.

Thank You to Paul Cogley, and Welcome to Ute-Christiane Freund and Katie Leute

The EAC thanks commissioner Paul Cogley for his time and service on the commission. Paul filled the Literary Arts partial term vacancy in 2022. He served on several committees, including Tourism Promotion Grants, Poet's Perspective, and Write on the Sound. Also, as an accomplished musician and recording artist, Paul assisted with Summer Concerts in the Park program. We wish Paul and his wife all the best in their new life in Texas! (Pictured: Paul Cogley with EAC Student Representative, Lily Kamila)

New to the EAC are two recently appointed commissioners: Ute-Christiane Freund and Katie Leute. Ute is a voice instructor and a former singer, actor and producer. Born in Europe, she has lived between the U.S. and Europe since 1984, moving to Edmonds in 2004. She returned to Europe in 2010 to teach at the University of the Arts in Berlin, and came back to Edmonds in 2020. Katie's family moved to Edmonds in 2020. Prior to that, she was an active member of the Spokane arts community. She is an entrepreneur, commercial graphic designer and brand manager, as well as a fine jewelry designer. The EAC is excited to have Ute and Katie join the commission and looks forward to their involvement.
