National Arts in Education Week and Arts & Humanities Month

Americans for the Arts celebrates the important role the arts play in our lives with two national recognition programs: National Arts in Education Week and National Arts & Humanities Month

National Arts in Education Week is Sept. 9-13. Passed by Congress in 2010, this week celebrates the transformative power of the arts and is designated to highlight the need for the arts in education so that elected officials and educational decision-makers nationwide can find ways to support equitable arts access for students of all backgrounds.

October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM) was established in 1993 to encourage Americans to explore the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of participation in programs offered in their communities.

In Edmonds: The Edmonds Theater

Did you know …the very existence of The Edmonds Theater is integral to the story of the ongoing love affair Edmonds has with art and culture? One of the best-known buildings on Main Street, the historic 230-seat movie house is among the last remaining independent, single-screen movie houses in the state. Since 1979, the Mayo family has owned and maintained the theater, stewarding this community treasure to support the vision of a thriving creative economy in Edmonds.

Built in 1923, the current theater (originally named The Princess Theater) replaced an earlier movie venue on the other side of the street. Inside the lobby, a mural by Edmonds artist Andy Eccleshall captures images from the theater’s history, and outside, at the foot of the staircase, an artist made plaque also commemorates its history.

Just over a hundred years after its doors opened, The Edmonds Theater continues to enrich the local artistic landscape. Although its main attraction is to provide first run films for all ages, the theater optimizes the use of its auditorium for many other presentations, such as Write on the Sounds’ Keynote Address, Edmonds Jazz Connection, Rick Steves lectures and the annual State of the City Address. Other rentals for birthday parties, professional gatherings, lectures and presentations are key to sustaining the theater. Sharing the facility and engaging in community events (such as handing out free popcorn on Halloween) all help to keep the theater relevant and connected within the community.

For movie schedules and information about renting the theater for your event or presentation, go to: www.theedmondstheater.net

Sister City Hekinan Japan

The Cities of Edmonds and Hekinan Japan have commemorated their Sister City relationship since its inception in 1990 through a variety of artwork gifts, including paintings, sculptures and traditional arts and crafts. Two examples of Edmonds Public Art Collection commemorative installations are The Friendship Tree by Steve Jensen and a traditionally carved Japanese stone lantern.

The Friendship Tree, created in 2004, is a carved cedar sculpture from a naturally felled tree and is located on the waterfront walkway just south of the ferry terminal. The word “friend” in Japanese, and an image of the sea turtle--a Japanese symbol of longevity--are combined with other nature-inspired design elements to commemorate the enduring friendship between the two communities.

A traditionally carved stone lantern located across the street from City Hall in Centennial Plaza is a gift of Hekinan Japan commemorating Edmonds Centennial in 1989.
