Real Jobs, Real Descriptions
by Denise Hyde
Who benefits from job descriptions and evaluations? Is it the risk managers, the human resource team, the lawyers, administrators, nurses' aides, nurses, or housekeeping? Why are they created and evaluated? Ask any number of people that work and live in long term care settings and you will get a variety of answers. Job descriptions and evaluations are part of all business organizations and fulfill a different need in each one. The question is how do they affect the people who work and make their home within the organizational structure? Click here to read the entire article.

Revolutionizing the Experience of "Home" by
Bringing Well-Being to Life The Eden Alternative Domains of Well-Being™
The ultimate goal of culture change in any care environment is well-being for all care partners (the Elder or individual accepting support, employees, family members, and volunteers), the organization and ultimately the larger community. How can you take the concept of well-being and make it come alive for everyone involved in the care relationship?
The Eden Alternative has answered this question by identifying seven Domains of Well-Being: identity, growth, autonomy, security, connectedness, meaning and joy. Assessment Tools have been created to measure well-being for individuals, teams and groups. Once understood, the language of the seven domains can be woven into daily life. Well-being, as a frame of reference, requires a focus on strengths, possibilities, dreams, and goals of each individual. Well-being presents the opportunity to define quality of life in terms of what each individual can do and what they have to offer their communities.
We invite you to learn more about the Domains of Well-Being, how they can help drive your culture change journey and how they are woven into the Path to Mastery. A free webinar is being offered on:

Time to "Pop the Question?"
by Dr. Al Power
I just returned from a rockin' session in Denver, Colorado. Nearly 50 people attended the 2-day Dementia Beyond Drugs training and the energy in the room was palpable. Among the attendees was Mary Dieffenbach, RN from Amberwood, who shared the success of their antipsychotic reduction trial-they have currently reduced their use by 32%! Mary has promised to send me more details of their process. I'll be on a conference call with CMS next week to discuss how to further identify the homes that have had great success and enlist them to help us teach others how to achieve similar results. A Beautiful Passing: A Family Care Partner Reflects
Eden Alternative Principles Six, Seven and Ten
Submitted by Masonic Village
Submitted by Masonic Village I am writing to praise the vision of administration to create and develop a hospice on the Masonic Village Lafayette campus. What perfect insight for you to see the potential for a seamless transition of care at end-of-life; of having your own staff care for the dying. I think it is particularly beneficial for those residents who have resided on the campus for one year, five years, ten years and more. The continuation of a long standing connectedness is so important. My mother recently experienced a decline on the Lafayette West neighborhood. Relative to her days of dying and her stay on hospice, I have nothing to say, but words of kindness and deep appreciation. Thank you for putting these people in place and allowing them to serve the specific needs of families such as mine. The hospice staff members I met were professional and educated in their specific tasks; comforting, indeed. The C.N.A. was gentle and compassionate. The RN was informative and communicative. And the chaplain's presence was priceless as he played a key role in helping orchestrate a peaceful passing. I was touched by the depth of the guide that he had prepared, and the palpable feeling of love and compassion it conveyed. Click here to read the entire article.
