Eclipse learning experiences shine a light on science 🌘

More than 32,000 solar eclipse glasses and 97.3% totality.

"As I look at the photos and hear about the activities that happened during the eclipse, I can't help but think this is what science is all about: observing, collecting data, asking questions and making sense of the world around us," said Ann Wallenmeyer, coordinator of science curriculum. "Students were able to learn about an eclipse, not from a textbook, but from seeing, hearing and feeling. They will never forget the experience and in turn the content that is connected to that experience."

SPS United: Christy St. John, teacher at Truman Elementary.

"One of the strategies that we use when teaching a math lesson is to be very clear with the objective of the lesson. The student knows the goal that they are working toward before we even begin. By connecting that new learning goal to the work we did the day before, it enables students to start building connections.

I think it’s important that they know the “why” of the lesson. Our lessons are broken into tasks, allowing students for solo thinking time, shared thinking, independent work, collaborative work and discussion with partners or the class. Lessons that allow students to interact with one another keep them engaged, because they want to share their thinking.

The idea that math discourse impacts students’ learning is something that the Math Specialist program through Missouri State taught me."
