"One of the strategies that we use when teaching a math lesson is to be very clear with the objective of the lesson. The student knows the goal that they are working toward before we even begin. By connecting that new learning goal to the work we did the day before, it enables students to start building connections.
I think it’s important that they know the “why” of the lesson. Our lessons are broken into tasks, allowing students for solo thinking time, shared thinking, independent work, collaborative work and discussion with partners or the class. Lessons that allow students to interact with one another keep them engaged, because they want to share their thinking.
The idea that math discourse impacts students’ learning is something that the Math Specialist program through Missouri State taught me."
