The Obesity-Oral Health Connection

Being overweight can have a negative impact on many aspects of overall health- including dental complications.  In fact, obesity is linked with an increased incidence of the inflammatory disease process known as  periodontitis.

Adipose tissue (aka: fat) has the ability to release pro-inflammatory markers.  Excessive amounts of adipose tissue can increase risk of or intensify pre-existing periodontitis by increasing the inflammatory markers known to stimulate bone-destroying cells and decrease blood flow to the periodontium (the structure that surrounds and supports teeth).

Small lifestyle changes can not only accumulate to big changes on the scale but also in your oral health and  future dental bills!

This  newsletter will give you tips and suggestions to help you to obtain and maintain a healthy weight.

Is My Weight Healthy?
You may be wondering if you are at a healthy weight. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one method used to classify weight into the following categories: underweight, healthy, obese, severely obese or morbidly obese.

Calculate your BMI:

BMI= weight (lbs) / [height (inches)]2 x 703

  Step by Step:

1. Calculate your height in inches squared

2. Divide weight in pounds by your squared hight (from Step #1)

2.  Multiply the quotient (solution from Step #2) by 703.

  Example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5'5" (65")

  Calculation: [150 (65)2] x 703 = 24.96 is the BMI

Underweight: <18.5

Normal Weight: 18.5-24.9

Overweight: 25-29.9

Obese: 30-34.9

Severely Obese: 35-39.9

Morbidly Obese: >40

Although BMI provides broad classifications of weight,

it is important to note BMI does not take the following into consideration:

  • gender
  • body composition (ratio: fat to muscle)
  • age
  • frame size
Refer to a doctor or registered dietitian to help establish  individualized weight goals for optimal health.

ASK THE DIETITIAN

Question from a patient:
Can gum problems contribute to heart issues?

Answer:
Chronic inflammation is at the root of both periodontitis (gum disease) and heart disease.

The inflammation from periodontal disease may contribute to or exacerbate existing heart conditions.

That being said, gum disease is likely not the primary and/or sole contributor of heart problems.

Many factors play into heart health including:

-weight
-diet
-exercise
-genetics
-medications
-alcohol
-preexisting medical conditions
-smoking
-stress
